Powerslave on Saturn (you know, I gotta go pick up the psx one for $5 some day and try it out too) was really cool for many reasons. Lobotomy did a GREAT job on the game. I agree that their Saturn Quake game sucked, it made me really detest Quake in general. Could anybody have made a decent Saturn Quake though?
Getting back to Saturn powerslave ... there was nice attention to detail and you thoroughly explored the levels, going back & forth but with new powers that allowed you to (for example) now cross that pool of acid, or jump higher to reach that previously inaccessible ledge, or even hover so you didn't need a bridge to get from one wall opening to the next.
The Egyptian theme was pretty cool too, with not only spiders and eagles but those Egyptian Dog-headed soldiers (complete with florescent "light-sourcing" blue fireballs) and other nasties. Remember the day and age back then -- PSX had light sourcing but this game was one of the first to have similar FX on Saturn, and it looked great. The frame rate was very smooth too. Compare it to the then-norm of maybe 15-20 fps of Hexen on Saturn (crap), then you get the 30fps (whatever it was) of Powerslave -- it was nice.
You ended up getting air powerups to go underwater, you'd fight killer piranhas under there while looking for the way out.
What really made Powerslave special was all these things together and the grenades which you needed to bomb out walls.
