You could probably pick up a TG-16 for like $15. It's a must-own system (uh, once you get the other 15 parts you need to make it play the cool import super arcade cd stuff), and its library is mostly cheap as hell.

I can't imagine it looking very pretty though and the graphical charm and bright colours are a big part of enjoying the series IMO.
The Tengen version really does suck. The patterns are all messed up. All of the fun of the arcade is gone. The japanese Sunsoft port is actually better than the SMS port in some ways. Closer to the arcade version anyway. The bosses are better int he SMS though.

For Fantasy Zone 1, I recommend getting the TG16 version. Although you can't go wrong with the SMS one either.

Tengen's one does suck; it feels so off in so many ways. I don't know why they didn't just release Sunsoft's version here. They did with Alien Syndrome and After Burner.

  5. Why not get Fantasy Zone 2? IMHO it's the best FZ game. But it's only available on the SMS as far as I know.

There's a Famicom version of Fantasy Zone 2 and an arcade version on SMS-based System E hardware.

Fantasy Zone 2 does kick ass.

  7. Yeh FZ2 is really good. I think it might be better than the first.. but I have so much nostalgia for the first game because it was the first SMS game I bought for myself (and quite possibly the first videogame I ever bought for myself.. I doubt I bought any 2600 games for myself)... Plus the music.. oh man the music.. some of the best music ever made is in Fantasy Zone!

As for the NES revs. I'd like to see some screenshots. I can't imagine NES/Famicom doing the game justice in the day-glo visuals department.

IT's got ports, and FZ2, while better than the SMS FZ is no where NEAR as good as the arcade one. Have you played the arcade version of the original?
