Thread: Star Ocean 2nd Story

  1. Star Ocean 2nd Story

On Thanksgiving Day my family and I drove 45 minutes to my Uncle's house. While there, I borrowed my cousin's Star Ocean 2nd Story, and I have to say I have found myself greatly enjoying it. I just now reached the 2nd disc, and so far I have almost no complaints, though I think the characters... well it's a little less than a story as dialogue lacks heavily.

Anyways as I am constantly in wonder lust of other people's opinions, I wonder what your views were of this game.

Maybe I'm just naive and don't see major flaws, or maybe I actually do have a thread of good taste for games at least in popular opinion. I do ask for your opinion's whether they are disrespecting the game, praising the game, or even dissing me.

One should always be open to criticism correct?

  2. The best PSX RPG. Its mad fun.. and countless hours of fun.. once you beat, espeaciilly sincer their are 80 endings.. and the dugen is their to keep on going.. I think my chars where in above in 100s..

    Ashton rocks..

  3. I'm interested in it. I found it extremely cheap a long time ago and sold it on eBay shortly there after for a good profit. The all of 5 minutes I played, I didn't much enjoy, though that's a given considering the genre. I've heard a lot of good about it though, so I still want to check it out.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

  4. I love this game. Great battle system, great music, and some cool characters.

I get a little touchy when people criticize the game's translation, though. My uncle worked on it, and any flaws the translation has are due more to SCEA's approach to localization than to the competency of the translators. SCEA did a rush job of the localization and did not adequately allow the translators to rework the dialogue sufficiently.

Some other Star Ocean trivia: the Ten Wise Men are named after my uncle's high school teachers, and one of the inns is named after my cousin.

I remember you posting this before, but I still gotta say:

I returned this game soley based on the crap translation.

I don't know why it happened, but if I can't identify with (or atleast feel a micron of sympathy) for a games characters I lose intrest.

One of the few games I've returned in the last five years, and I really wanted to like it, but sadly I couldn't...

Cool, I always said not enough RPGs went over Level 100... so me being level 50 doesn't mean the game will be extremely easy.

Oh, and Ashton does rock .

  7. i really like the battle system, but i found the cooking/etc system to be kind of overwhelming

i played probably 10 hours into it a while ago, and tried to get back into it, but i totally forget where i left off

I remember saying it before, and I remember your response, but I'm still going to post it every time someone criticizes Star Ocean 2's translation. I think very few people understand just how much time and effort is required to produce a quality translation from a different language. Think about it; most books take years to translate properly, and your average RPG easily has as much text as a standard work of fiction. Is it so unreasonable to demand that publishers devote a little more time and resources to providing a good translation?

All I'm saying is, blame the REAL culprit -- SCEA -- and not my hard-working uncle.

  9. Boring, tedious, and childish, SUCKED!!!!!

  10. Cool game, excellent music, nice graphics, and most importantly, a console rpg battle system that doesn't put me in a coma.

Plus what are, quite possibly, the greatest combat voices in the history of gaming.
