Anyway. I think it brings up some valid points about the fact that these movies could use an injection of suspence and craftsmanship above simple hack and slash. It would definitely return the feeling of the films being dark and suspense filled.

But Freddy vs. Jason isn't really about the main characters. (I haven't seen it yet, just going from my expectations and commercials) I don't know why you'd even bother building up interesting main characters, because people want to see Freddy and Jason kill people anyway. It's to the point where they've almost BECOME the good guys and killing is the acceptance to their badassness.

Also, adding special effects on-caliber with Saving Private Ryan or other big budget flicks is not always wise. If this movie cost like 80 million to make, I don't think anybody would have made money off of it. And that's the goal in the end. As it is now, the movie was successful because it knew it had a limited audience (18 +) and did what they had to do.

In the end I'd love to see more development between the two characters and more suspense.

Oh, and what's the deal with Freddy? Isn't he a failed government project? I know Jason was tortured and stuff in the camp, but how did he become a big zombie? I've only seen a few Friday movies, so I'm not totally in the clear here.

I'm hoping to see it today or tomorrow, though.

Also: Who the hell's Leatherface? I'm not too adept at horror flicks outside of the Shining. But what's his deal?
Hmm, Even if watched few of Nightmare films, you should have known the story of Freddy, since they always take time to explain how he came to be a dream haunting demon. As Dolemite posted earlier, Freddy's mother was working as a nurse at mental hospital, and got traped with in the ward with group of mental maniacs and raped repeatedly, thus giving birth to Freddy, who grew up to being a Child Murder and possibly molester. When parents of children he killed decided to do some viginlante justice, and burned him alive, he came back in the demonic form, to kill his victims in their dreams and feed on thier souls and fear.

Leatherface is a one of the members of inbred Texas family of cannibals, from infamous Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He loves to skin his victims and wears skinned face as a mask. He also got a big chainsaw he loves to use. He is a pretty sucky character though.

Well, She lives long enough, but not that long . And I for one liked how this movie didnt spare its characters, other than 2 main ones(well its a tradition of the genre).

I'm interested in checking out the movie ('13th' fan here), but a few of my co-workers have mentioned that the movie is more 'Elm Street' than '13th' in style and I might not enjoy the movie as much because of it. I liked the first 'Elm St', but after Freddy was turned into an on and off (mainly off) comedian I wasn't interested in the movies as much. Is the Freddy vs Jason movie more 'Elm St.' in style?
Oh, Another Friday fan. Dolemite could use some support Dont worry man, it has all the classic elements of Friday 13th series, and those blended prefectly into Nightmares formula. Jason has a great time, and if you are fan of his so will you.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

A little clairification: Freddy's mother was a nun, not a nurse. The raping part is correct, he's the bastard son of 100 maniacs. And yes, he was a child molester. He was a really fucked up person. They finally caught him, but a lawyer got him off by finding a loophole in the system (they have never gone into more detail than that so far). Fed up, the parents of the town took matters into their own hands and burned him alive in the boiler room he called home. Freddy's Dead gives some good info on his past (I liked this one). I don't think they have ever said how long it was from his death to when he started killing in dreams.

Pretty much, they wouldn't be fan favorites if it was any other way. NO ONE sees a Friday movie to see anything but Jason taking people out.

Mr. K: I'm pretty sure the vein death is from 5. I don't think I've ever seen that whole movie, I'm a little fuzzy on the details. I know it's not from 3 though. Freddy has had some memorable kills though. Other highlights are the cockroach transformation (from 4 as Dole said earlier), the TV smash (3), the motorcycle meld (I think 5, this one was amazing) and the bed eruption from the original. Some of the cool ones aren't that gory either. He turns someone into a comicbook character and shreds them, it's pretty neat. I used to have a book on the first 6 movies, I wish I kept it.

I just counted, I think there are 17 kills (I may have missed 2 or 3 at the rave, it goes by pretty quick, and I'm counting the first kill with the chick and the tree).

  3. Mr. K is right. the vein marionette death is from Nightmare 3. you'd think that after all the deaths in that one, they'd shut the institution down, but there it was still in business in F vs J.

    Oh, and Jason won.
I'm not a devious man by nature... but when you're unarmed, your tactics might gonna be downright Archimedean.

I forgot about her being a nun Need to pick up first 5 Nightmare films on dvd, but I can live without last 2.

Nicely said. Both Freddy and Jason are main attractions. You come to see them kill bunch of usually retarded characters.

Rumpy, the Vein in fact IS from Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. It was one the puppeteer guy, who, Freddy led to the rooftop by his pulled out veins. Cockroach transformation is indeed from Part 4, and I love that Freddy Bike bit in Part 5.

Freddy's mom WAS a nurse at the time of the rape- she became a nun afterwards. The loophole was that the search warrant was signed in the wrong place.

    I think you're off by a 1. Let's see, there's (in order):

The skinny dipper (Machette through her chest into the tree)
Katharine Isabelle's boyfriend (stabbed multiple times in back, folded in half in bed)
Blake and his dad (Dad decapitated, Blake chopped up)
Katharine Isabelle and the Rave Kid (double impalement)
Kids at the rave (1 neck broken, 1 flaming machette through chest, 4 slashed/stabbed)
    Mark (Back burned, face slashed)
    Security guard (crushed under door)
Cop (electrocuted, head smashed into table)
    "Jay" (Cut in half)
    Linderman (impaled on spike)
Kia (Smacked with machette into tree)

I think that's all of them.

Dolemite, the Bad-Ass King of all Pimps and Hustlers
Gymkata: I mean look at da lil playah woblin his way into our hearts in the sig awwwwwww

  6. There might be couple more during the rave, but otherwise its pretty much accurate count.

The only kill they kinda pussied out was Blake. They only showed splash of blood against the window. Every other death you could see in all lovely details.

You're half right. Freddy was created as a result of a failed government experiment, but he wasn't the experiment itself. As silly as this sounds (Nightmare fans here will atteat to the shame they feel whenever this fact is brought up), the government was doing testing into genetic engineering in order to develop substitutes for artificial sweeteners. They were splicing the DNA from convicted serial killers and spider monkeys with that of ordinary household cleaning agents and an explosion was the result. Fred Krueger was the night janitor at the research facility and was going about his business of mopping up a coffee spill when he was caught in the blast. The DNA and chemicals mutated him into the Toxic Avenger, New Jersey's first superhero! But soon, he became evil and grew into the evil Freddy Krueger we all know and love.

He's from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He's got a leather face. He sucks.

Surpassing analysts' predictions, New Line Cinema's Freddy vs. Jason, took in a fearsome $36.4 million at the box office over the weekend, according to studio estimates, swatting Sony-Columbia's S.W.A.T. out of first place. "Freddy vs. Jason really performed incredibly," Exhibitor Relations chief Paul Dergarabedian told Bloomberg News. "The combination of the two [Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street characters] together was much more powerful than these individual franchises. This is a great way to reinvigorate the genre." Noting that the film has been in development since 1994, New Line distribution chief David Tuckerman told the Hollywood Reporter: "The core fans have been waiting [almost] 10 years for us to get our act together and make this thing." With about half the number of tickets that it sold last week, S.W.A.T. moved to second place with around $18.6 million.
Oh hell yeah. Glad to see it's a complete success (official budget: $25 million)!

Whoa, hey now, let's keep this shit civil! No ones shit on Jason here! Let's keep Troma and the Dream Master far-a-fucking-part!

I really need to see 3 again, I don't remember the vein death in that one at all.
