Thread: Problem with new PS2

  1. Problem with new PS2

I just picked up a brand new PS2... I got home, hooked it up, tried it out ........... and I seem to have a problem.. Not surprised at all considering it's Sony, but I'd like some feedback before I go exhange it for another.

Basically the problem is that the top 10% of the screen seems to.. "flicker" or something. I am not sure that is the right word for it.. but it's like there are different coloured lines at the top of the screen and it shakes a bit in spurts.

It only happens when a game is loading or when when a game goes from screen to screen.. or even when you first turn the system on with no game. Always when the screen is black. Once a game is in gameplay it works fine though.

Here is what I do know. 1, It's not the game because I tried more than one. 2, It's not the television inputs because I tried several (Video 1, Video 2, etc) and my other consoles work fine.

Anyone have an explanation/advice for me before I go back to the store? Thanks in advance.

ps. It's happening a bit on the bottom of the screen as well.

  2. Damn, Sorry to hear that

I wish I could give you advice on what going on, but I have no idea what might be the cause. Hopefully its nothing major, and if it is, I hope the replacement one will work fine.

  3. take it back. simple usually little problems that might "go away" come back worse than ever when you cant afford to replace it.

  4. My experience is that some stores try to screw with you, but since you bought it today they will probably just give you a new one without any hassle.

Yeh that's what I am thinking. There is definitely soemthing wrong. I'll exhange. Even if it went away I think I would if but just for peace of mind since I tend to worry about things like that anyway.

I am curious about what the problem is though, so I figured I'd post a topic to see if anyone knows anything about if it's common or not. Just to be sure...

I guess I am going back to EB tomorrow.

I got it at EB and they're usually pretty good about returns. That's the one main reason I tend to buy expensive items like consoles and electronics at large well known stores.

I recently had to go thru an ordeal returning a defective PC monitor. But they took it back with no problems and gave me a new one. I tend to have back luck with buying duds, as you can see!

  6. Man, buy the extended warranty from EB. I'm telling you, those things are life-savers. If you use it even once, it'll have more than paid for itself, and since it's a Sony system, you'll be using it more than once. I'm on my THIRD PS2 right now thanks to the warranty.

Yeah, especially w/ everything going CD. I've seen people pass up on the warranty and regret it down the road. Plus, you can't put a price on piece of mind. $25-$30 today could save you +$100 tomorrow.

  10. Companies often make most of their money selling warranties. I don't know, maybe I have been lucky but I have a lot of systems going all the way back to the Atari 2600 and I have never had a problem with any of them. Now saying that, my next console purchase will probably give me huge problems..
