Thread: Problem with new PS2

  1. well you are the m.o.d...

  2. Yeah good point! I am the M.O.D with every other aspect of my life but not when it comes to video gaming.

  3. FighterX, that's the key reason I buy all of my consoles at EB. That warranty is a Godsend. Although now, instead of replacing the defective system with a new one, they'll give you a refurbished one. Not quite as good, but still better than having to shell out over $100 for a new console.

Now saying that, my next console purchase will probably give me huge problems..
Same here. I've never had a problem 'til this time. It's just bad luck I guess.. but much better to have a problem right off the bat than it is to have one down the road. At least I go go right back tomorrow and have it switched.

Ticked me off though since it was a birthday present for me.

  5. I would also dare to say that if a gamer is going to have a manufacturer problwm thus rendering their system useless, it is probably going to happen right away and not down that road. And personally, I don't know any store that would not let you at least exchange your faulty system that was recently purchased with a new one. And even if they wanted to be bitches about it, simply go to a different store that has one of those "no hassle" return polices and return/exchange it there.

I don't buy that. What the hell do you people do to your consoles that they're constantly breaking? I don't dust mine, I carry them around, I leave them on for hours, I stack them on top of each other, and yet I've only had one malfunction, and that was a 9-year-old SNES.

Stock warranties cover you for a year, and by then, the console will be cheaper. Why throw away $50 now on the off chance you might have to buy a new PS2 three years down the road, when they'll only cost $100?

If EB warranties cover modified consoles, then that might be worthwhile. But they still don't cover your modicfication investment.

  7. I agree with burg and TM50. I don't see the sense in buying those warrentys. It just seems like a big scam to me..... but on the other hand, the.. ahem.. "quality" of Sony products is a scam as well. Their stuff (accross the board) is practically designed to break so I can see why someone would go for it on a Sony product.

Anyway, I am gonna go swap the system later.. but I am so ticked off and the PS2 is such a piece of flaming crap that I am half tempted to get something else with the money.. but there are a bunch of games I want to play and it was a birthday present so I think I'll just keep the status quo... we'll see.. This took the air out of my balloon anyway.

The EB warranty is $50 cdn for the first year, $35 to renew. Given the system's track record, I think it's too big a risk not to buy one. I don't think that two years from now the system will be down to $85, and even if it is, how does that help me if it breaks down next month?

Besides, given the way the universe works, spending that money on the warranty seems to be the one way to guarantee that it won't break. I've never had a system conk out on me either (aside from the NES and all the wonderful "blow on the cartridge" adventures I had with it), but I don't plan to start now with what's been regarded as the most unreliable system in years.

Unless you were going to spend the $50 on Dynasty Tactics. Then you'd be crazy to get the warranty instead

  9. Btw, sggg, how old, and what model is your TV? The PS1 and PS2 don't like Zeniths, and they don't like certain older sets.

Burg, as to your lack of console failure, you've been lucky. As have I, to this point. The GC and Xbox are the only consoles I've bought a warranty on, and it wasn't due to a pushy salesman. For the XB, it was the hard drive. For the GC, it was the idea that if it died 91 days down the road, I'd have to ship it off, wait 4 weeks, and pay an assload of shipping. That'd blow the $30 I spent on a 3yr-no-questions-asked-instant-replacement warranty at CompUsa and then some. And I don't have to wait 4 weeks to play on my GC.

It's a wonderful one month old 20" Toshiba flat screen. I can't remember the model # off-hand though.

It works fine with Dreamcast and Saturn.
