My Playstation 2 seems to have trouble with dual layer DVDs...

It seems that my Playstation 2 has trouble with DVDs that are dual layers. This has been going on for some time now, but I just got around to posting about it after it screwed up last night watching Star Wars Episode II. Basically, right around the middle of a movie when the player should be switching layers the image starts stuttering, and eventually I get a disc read error. Usually about 1-3 chapters are affected total.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so did you figure out how to correct it? I'm thinking maybe updating the DVD drivers would clear it up, but I don't want to drop $20 on a remote that I really don't need that much. Any help is much appreciated.

  2. Easy solution:

    Watch DVDs on an Xbox.

Me kicking you square in the nuts.

Seriously though, anyone else care to offer any words of wisdom on the subject?

  4. I'm sorry if this doesn't fix your problem, but it just might. Click on the image.

  5. well you're not going to get a good answer regardless.....DO NOT adjust the voltage. itll only prolong the life of something thats going bad anyway. if you wanna watch movies get a stand alone unit. its not what you want to hear but its the truth. im sure SONY could fix it but itll be a lot or the other option would be to buy another ps2. but why? if the games are unaffected get a cheap Apex player from Wal-Mart and hack it

  6. DREs are usually caused by dust buildup on the lens, especially if it's one of the early models. Take it apart and clean off the lens with a q-tip/alchohol combo, piku. The DRE problem has happened to me at least 3 times, and cleaning the lens fixed the problem for some months in each case.

Looks like I will be digging for some Q-Tips later today... thanks for the info.

Where do you people keep your systems that they get dust on the lense? I have never had a problem with any of my systems in about 22 years of gaming, with the exception of the damn controller ports on the DC, which was cheap and easy to fix.

  9. PS2.

If you've ever seen the list of DVD's that have trouble playing on it, its quite huge.

Unfortunately all of the solutions are arbirtrary.

If your going to watch Dual-layered DVD's, be careful, and try not to use your PS2. I know a few people who have ruined their copies of those discs, and one who had to send his PS2 to be fixed.

I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but it must be your system. I've watched Ep2 dozens of times and I haven't encountered any errors.

...and exactly how would you go about updating the DVD drivers?

Andy, how hard was it to simply post the URL than an image?
