Thread: Favorite First-Person Shooters

  1. COUNTER_STRIKE-ONE SHOT, HEAD SHOT.
    HALF LIFE- CROWBAR CHASER

  2. Counter Strike: Condition Zero will soon own you all...

  3. System Shock - This game was several years ahead of its time in graphics, story, and gameplay. With this game, Looking Glass set the stage for great things to come.

Hexen – One of Raven’s early masterworks. It pushed the Doom 2 engine to its limits and the multiplayer mode was innovative, weapons had several components scattered throughout the level that had to be assembled.

Thief: Gold & Thief II - My all time favorite PC games. No other game has engrossed me as much as these two. The focus on stealth over brute force was unprecedented at the time, and it’s a shame that so few games have followed in their footsteps. Even though Looking Glass Studios is gone, there are still loyal fans creating custom missions while eagerly awaiting Ion Storm’s Thief 3.

Any type of gameplay trait you can think of in other genres has been used in some FPS.
And that affects the gameplay so very much...

  5. Goldeneye
    MOHAA/FL
    are good.

    CS is the best.

    Metroid prime
    Halo
    sucked.

If you guys want to play on a Good CS server, hit up www.checkyour6.net

They have great players, 2 servers (Primary has AMP enabled, Secondary does not).

You can find the IP on that site. And, whoever said CS:CZ will own is correct.

    LAW's, FAMAS's and Riot Shields.

Someone needs to make a Black Hawk Down Hostage Rescue Map though.

Nah. I was just giving you a hard time, while subtley suggesting that perhaps "FPS" is suitably descriptive. Except in the case of Metroid, of course, because it defies description, or so we've been told repeatedly on this board.
    "Fiends! Animals! Bastards!"

The different types of games within the FPS does in fact affect the gameplay so very much.

Wolfenstein / Doom / Quake / Duke Nukem - These games are pure action. You shoot shoot and shoot some more. Shoot them before they shoot you. Gameplay revolves around intense shootouts with often many enemies on the screen.

Half-Life is sort of that, but adds in a heckuvalot more exploration and some puzzles.

And then there are the stealth games like Thief, Goldeneye, NOLF, etc where no, you don't simply look for people and shoot them. You have to keep an eye out for every little thing. In Goldeneye, you must find and take out security cameras, for instance, or else they'll spot you and send endless reinforcements. Using sniper rifles to strategically take out people far away is a must. This type of game is much slower paced and requires really looking at your surroundings. You'll have to switch to weaker guns with silencers so as to not arouse people around you. You can't always just run everywhere. You'll want to approach people from behind.

Then there's fragfests where the intensity is ever-present with many other real life players. Whether you choose to sit in a spot and wait for them to come to you, or you actively running around killing people, is up to you. Everyone is your enemy.

Then there's more tactical games like CounterStrike where people are in teams and you will want to strategize. You can have team members covering your behind as you creep up on the enemy base. You can even be the sacrificial lamb to bait the enemy so that your teammates can mow them down. Your team can surround, can set up formations, etc etc. The possibilities are up to human imagination.

At the core, you may be thinking, "Well, you still run around and shoot people in first person view." But that's just as saying that all platformers are the same, all shooters are the same, all sports games are the same. If the gameplay were really the same in all FPS's, we wouldn't have all these varying answers.

I don't know. His rationale in naming it a first-person shooter made sense. It's in first person and you shoot things. That's all that the name first-person shooter implies. Sure, it may not be a TRADITIONAL FPS. Sure, it may focus alot on adventure and exploration, but it can still be considered an FPS.

Look at System Shock. Some call the game an RPG. It's still on many people's lists though.

The point is, there are many types of first-person shooters. They come in all of different forms. You can't say something isn't an FPS just because it doesn't play like CS.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  9. What makes metroid prime not a first person shooter?
