  1. tell me about the kid.....alex kid

i've always wanted to play the games but never have. what games are on the genisis that are worth getting/playing. what are the games like, mario, sonic, mega man? or is it totally different from any other platformer? are the games hard to find? thanks for all of your help.

  2. I don't get it.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  3. - Alex Kidd in Miracle World (SMS)
    - Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars (SMS)
    - Alex kidd in Shinobi World (SMS)
    - Alex Kidd in High-Tech World (SMS)
    - Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (Genesis)

I think I may be missing one.

You can pick them all up pretty cheap, except for maybe Miracle World. That probably has something to do with the fact that it's the best in the series. I love that game, as well as Enchanted Castle on Genesis. The others are so-so.

  4. Alex Kidd in Miracle World is better than all of the other Alex Kidd games combined. In fact, it's one of the best platformers ever made and is still quite vital today. The rest of the games range from pretty good to forgettable.

However, unless you have a Power Base Converter the only Alex Kidd game you'll be playing on Genesis will be the Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. The rest were Master System games.

AKitEC is a pretty good game though. It brought back some of the core gameplay of Miracle World. The game was a first generation Genesis game and the graphics are far from the best that Genesis was capable of. The controls are a bit loose too. I am not sure if the game has aged that well but it was pretty enjoyable when it was new. It's probably still a decent game anyway... but the definitive Alex Kidd experience is definitely Miracle World. That's an all-time classic of the highest order.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World is sort of Sega's counterpart to the first Super Mario Bros. The boss battles are Janken (paper/rock/scissors) matches. Instead of jumping to headbutt the blocks or jumping on top of enemies, Alex Kidd breaks blocks and knocks out enemies with punches.

The Genesis has Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle which is a direct sequel to this game (the SMS has a few other AK games which are rather different).

You forgot Alex Kidd: BMX Trail for Master System... It is a decent vehicle game that was Japan-only.

    ...

I would be thrilled beyond comprehension of Sega made a new Alex Kidd GBA game (based on Miracle World). Sega's Japanese site has a really cool new feature on Alex Kidd in Miracle World online right now: http://sega.jp/community/album/04_alex/ - I just wish I could read it. I saved the whole thing to my hard drive though.

  7. is alex kid a monkey? he looks like a little monkey.

Some serious memories came rushing back upon reading the thread title.

After working for pennies on a newspaper route, I finally had the $189.98, (plus tax) for a SegaGenesis. Many times during that summer of 1989 I had ridden my bike out to one of the malls to sample the Genesis and TurboGrafx displays. The Turbo marketing, and packaging kinda had me won over, but I was scared off by the CD unit (because of the price and I thought they'd release all the good games for it and make it a "must have"), and Keith Courage in AlphaZones just didn't seem right. ..I think I had exposure to LegendaryAxe at this point also, and the Turbo games seemed choppy to me compared to even the NES.
now, Come to think of it; I don't actually recall ever playing a Genesis demo unit. (..I know I wanted Thunderblade though)
regardless of all that. Altered Beast had made a very favorable impression those few times I'd played it at the bowling alley out on Locust Lane. Y'know, I didn't play a Genesis before owning one. ..'cause now I remember being suprised that the top didn't open when I unpackaged it. Because of the circular raised area around the cart-port on the model 1, I'd somehow formed the idea it was a CD lid. ..imagine my suprise.

    ..oh yeah.. Alex Kidd ...
so I had my Genesis and Altered Beast. loved it, loved it, loved it.
but I had no money to buy any of the few games available. $49.99 a pop. AlexKidd EnchantedCastle was immediatedly suspect because it was the only game at 39.99. I wasn't even interested. (And why the hell don't any of the store have Atomic Robo Kid?!)Ghouls and Ghosts was the best looking game around, ..gee if I had a dollar for every time I flipped over the G&G display slipcard at Toys R Us.. but I wasn't about to spend $54.99 on that game, especially 'cause it would be too hard (misled expectations due to Ghosts and Goblins).
(Populous was the first game I bought. ..and the freakin' thing didn't work on my TV ..damn unliscenced EA games!)
    this story sucks. ..sorry
So, anyway. I play the shit out of Altered Beast. ..heck I even went back to playing some Pitfall2 on 5200. No feasible purchases are on the horizon. ..I've returned to my regularly scheduled childhood activities like riding the dirt trails in the woods, playing war, and building treeforts. then..(still reading?) One day returning from the woods, there on my bed is the unmistakable shape and volume of the Altered Beast case. ..except I detect the glisten of shrinkwrap! Holy shit! what's this? I probably ran to my mom looking for clarification -she didn't buy it. Mark got it. What?! My brother; who I can't for the life of me ever remember seeing play videogames (the 5200 was his btw), so my brother, shit-head, mother-fucking asshole older brother bought a game. Bah!, but of course -he got the least expensive game available: AlexKidd in the Enchanted Castle. I don't want to play this kiddie crap. Give me Thunderblade! give me Truxton! heck, give me BoxyBoy. ..but AlexKidd?
Bah, I'm sure I complained, but alas I gave it its due, expecting some action along the lines of MarioBros I wasn't too far let down. ..hmm jump on stuff, get coins. Nice big characters. Colorful. Pleasant music. And PaperScissors RockS! Booyah! now we're gotting somewhere ..this game is strange. I like it!
(I'm longwinded. And out of steam.)
The only downside to Enchanted Castle (at the time) was there wasn't hardly enough hidden areas. There may have been only a handful of extra areas to discover within all the levels. I wanted vines to climb, and basements to find. [/ramble]

    monkey?
    yeah, he's a Monkey.

I'm suprised ECM wasn't all over his nuts

  9. Alex Kidd in Miracle World is all you need.

    High Tech was cool too.

How bout a Alex Kidd Compilation SEGA?

  10. I'm the first Kidd hater to enter the thread. I don't like his games at all. Bad look, bad control, bad music. And that sums it up from my perspective.

    I can't freakin' believe it.

..and I almost backspaced over that sentence 'cause I thought it was silly to reference the street.

another coincidence is I'm actually in Hbg tonight. Met some freinds out at the new Gilligans on Rt22 ..not at all my type of place, but I did notice they have an Indiana Jones Temple of Doom pinball machine

  13. I am one old Sega/SMS fan that never thought Alex Kidd was all that special. Miracle World is pretty good, and Lost Stars is very good in an acid trip kinda way, but the rest are forgettable. I really didn't like Enchanted Castle at all. Save your money and go buy some Wonderboy games. I really never got why or how AK became the spokesmonkey for the SMS anyway.

  14. Shinobi World is excellent , all of the others are trash.

  15. Again ill state that %99 of the sms library was trash...

  16. Alex Kidd is probably the only 8-bit Sega series worthy of the term overrated.

But I still liked every game in the series with the exception of The Lost Stars.

Miracle World is the best game in the series. The market had yet to be flooded by mascot-ish platformers and Miracle World was quite good for its time although it's not in the same league as Mario or even Wonder Boy 1. I'm willing to bet anyone who says this game sucks did not play it in 1987. It reminds me of Kid Icarus; good for its time but surpassed by similar stuff soon afterwards.

Enchanted Castle was a decent sequel to Miracle World and it certainly stood out as something different in the first-generation Genesis line-up. A good game but it felt like a better-looking, worse-playing version of Miracle World.

High-Tech World is clearly Alex Kidd in name only. I found it to be a very unique adventure game, a weird hybrid of gaming styles.

Shinobi World is probably the only game in the series that gets underappreciated. It's way too short and easy but the gameplay is great. It rewards exploration and its design very Mario-influenced.

Overall, it's not a bad series. Just don't expect the pinnacle of 8-bit gaming or anything.

  17. That 1989 genny game was awful ....I think it was miracle world or something.*shudder*

    Sad but true.
Praying for a Cosmic Fantasy Collection for PS2, Xbox and GameCube.

  19. what are the wonderboy games like?

  20. The Wonder Boy games are a hell of a lot better than Alex Kidd games.

Wonder Boy 1 is a platformer, the rest are platform/RPGs. Plus there's Monster Lair which is a platform/shooter but it's the weakest game in the series.
