hmm only thing i can think of to help it is either getting a lens cleaner (blaze make sone for the PS2 specifically) or opening it up and cleaning the system your self
I have a launch PS2, and suddenly, the other day, the optical output stopped working. After moving it to a different TV, I found out that the composite audio still works fine, but then I started getting disc read errors. I know many people have had the disc read errors, and that there's likely nothing I can do about it, but has anyone run into the problem with the optical output before? Also, is there anything I can do to lessen the disc read errors? I know with the original Playstations, you could tilt them to make them more reliable, and I'm willing to hang the thing from the ceiling at a 45 degree angle if it helps me play The Sims without having to turn the thing off and on for 15 minutes.
Any feedback is helpful.

Have you used a disk cleaner on the system? Like CD based systems of the past, the lens needs to be cleaned from time to time, much like a CD player does.
I'm not that familiar with the optical out, but if you leave it in the open air, without keeping the cord or dust cover on, it could just have dust build up. Using an alcahol swab (Above 90%) you could clean the port.
i've just started getting disc read errors myself, so yea, help would be appreciated. [looks at andyrose to post up that handy link again]
While AndyRose' link was very helpful, it only delayed the inevitable. My system eventually kicked the bucket and I was ass out.
my system still plays movies fine (except a few that never played to begin with), but i'm just annoyed that i can't seem to play a few of my games. one being Frequency. there's so much more left to finish.
Well, since Andy isn't around, and Master would not see it anyway:

Return to Walmart and say "Hey stupid idiot that has no idea what they are doing. Will you take my 2 year old PS2 and give me a brand spankin new one even if I don't have a reciept." clerk- "Ugh [shrug] sure." And voila, you have a brand spankin new system.

Thanks Regus.
I have used a disc cleaner regularly, and there's been a cable plugged into the optical port the entire time, so I know those aren't the problem. I know I'm just delaying the inevitable. It's dying, and it will soon probably die, I just don't like it enough to want to buy a new one just yet.
I can't complain too much though, since I know a lot of people who bought launch systems who didn't have as good of luck as I have.

My launch system went bonkers around the time frequency came out. I remember getting home, playing it 2 times, then it refused to boot that, and ANY other blue discs. Tis the sign of the end.
