Thread: The GameGo "invasion" in retrospect

  1. yawa: the boards actually "crashed" due to my trial/error tinkering with making tweaks/improvements...not all entirely related to the influx of users whatsoever.

    *ahem*

But now for a real, constructive answer (off the record) *hops of mod seat*

Despite what many believed, I didn't have any natural resentment towards the Go! community, that is until the "merging" took place. I was very pleased to see such an active community in action (although that said little for the spastic one which existed on TNL at the time). Kenshin seemed to have found a second home, one which was devoid of myself and whatever areas seemed to leave him agitated for one reason or another (but I digress...

Once I was informed of the news that the GameGo! community would be moving in (temporarily as it was initially expected), I tried to look at things optimistically. Of course, that was all overshadowed by the rigid (or what some would consider the forum nazi) atmosphere to keep the boards functioning as a wholly fun and organized hub for discussion. Anyone that's been with us from the beginning of that era will no doubt testify that I was / can be / I am (usually) coming across as a jerk (so I am really thankful for those that can look past the rough exterior and recognize I generally don't mean anything by it). Noted. Managing a board of the magnitude that the boards has grown to, is a very big responsibility. One which I can honestly say I was not prepared for. Our community consists of a vast range of gaming tastes/personalities which has helped not only enrich the board's character and numbers, but has attracted others to find out what's under the surface.

From that, we've been able to benefit from several new significant contributions to the boards giving people a place to share their high scores (thanks to cigs and Mode7), general discussion, movies (attributed to a number of users, namely Despair, Korian and others) and finally --- Fight Club. Looking back on where we were compared to the present state of the boards, I can't picture what it would be like if some of those hubs were suddenly absent. And while there are occassional events where we have disagreements, we've been able to move beyond the conflicts (or at least learn to use the Ignore feature) so that our enjoyment of the boards aren't tainted.

cka has been a great help to alleviate potential board crashes and other areas that qualifies under his attention. then of course, there's all of you who each day step in from the crack of dawn to the late midnight hours - discussing games, movies, girls, and everything else under the sun. In whole, it has made TNL forums a much more complete epicenter for discussion of all sorts.

Much like Cynical, I too aren't very socialable online, but I am making it a goal to get more involved (when I have the time) by participating in threads which pique my interest or composing my own. Things go by at such a rapid pace here that it's really hard to keep up (and trust me, though it seems as if I am monitoring things 24/7...that couldn't be far from the truth). Which also brings up the point about our moderators, who Nick/Burg/I work very hard to instruct/educate on how to effectively keep things relatively fair and practical. It's not always perfect and we're all bound to slip at times (but that's what the trademark Feedback board is for is it not?)

It's interesting that there's been so many threads popping up on occassional, not that it's an issue at all. I think it's great that everyone can assemble together and reflect on the past to better the present and the future. I am confident that several more months from now, we'll be doing this again and look back on other signficant events in our board history and be able to laugh at it all and recall a lot of good times. ^_^

    *scrambles back to seat*

    Bacon: PM ME!!!!

...oh ONE MORE THING --- I'd also believe everyone should especially thank Nick who rightfully deserves just as much thanks for the state of the boards today then ever. His unconditional passion and love for gaming, integrity, and fun has been a GREAT motivational boost for the boards and TNL.

    (and we're just getting started)

Error: that "slowdown" actually shouldn't be blamed on the "invasion" entirely...but a very insufficient host, a bandwidth cap, and very unstable board software. (bless vB)...

  2. hahaha...do you like me?? Am I annoying?? hahaha huh-huh-huh?
I like the shinky white light, and the migration, infact i came right in the begining one of the first to make the change ii think....it was worth it. Everything changed.
You can never be one of the dead, because something that has no existence can have no community.

I hated that. Then Bahn (or Kenshin... where the hell did HE go?) changed the name of the Videogame board to 'GameGO' or some crap like that. it kinda pissed me off, but only because we had all these new people and they were acting like they owned the place.

    some of them still do.

hell, im not even familiar with half of the faces around here anymore. in the past two weeks ive seen 2 new people with 1000 posts. i'm not sure if the GG invasion was for the best, but it certanly has been interesting.

    weird.

    Have a cookie
    dont mind if i do.

  4. Considering the board activity was pretty spastic, more good has come from the two communities merging as opposed to remaining seperate. Kenshin had no direct influence over the name being changed - it was my personal decision out of respect for the noble endeavor which several individuals aspired to create. In the end, despite a few unexpected shockwaves among board patrons -- the Go! essence remained as a optional board theme for nostalgic and aesthetic value for those who showed dissention with the universal blue hue.

In case you haven't figured it out by now, Kenshin is no longer a part of TNL. His ties were severed two months prior to our move to a new dedicated server. If you really miss him, I suppose you can try opening up discussions with him over at System Zero which has become his new home (I am not sure if he was welcomed or they eventually just learned to put up with him). I can't say he'd be honestly happy to see you (or many people on this board). (and then there's his LJ, but I won't go there...)

In any case, if people acting like this forum is there is the least of our worries, then we have little to be concerned about.

I was thinking the same thing. These TNLers are still delusional.

  6. Thank you. Thank you for reading my topic...
