Thread: Lighting Bolt

  1. Lighting Bolt

TBS just showed "Lighting Bolt", a Jackie flick I never new existed. I caught most of it and it was pretty good. The casino fight was crazy, but I didn't like some of the direction. They used a slow-mo/blur thing that made it hard to see what the hell was going on, and it was full screen so everything looked really close and cut off. They also sped the film up a couple times, something I don't care for. Makes things look weird. A lot of stuff is really over the top (the last race) and comes off as goofy to me. It also looked like there was more wire work for your typical Jackie movie. In this one he was a race car driver..and some shit goes down...I didn't pay close attention. The credits say it was done in 1995 and New Line brought it over in 2000. An interesting line from the credits went something like this, "The film makers wish to sincerly apologies to the race car drivers who were injured in the making of this film." Yikes!

    Anyone else catch this one?

  2. Was the title actually misspelled?
    God is Rome

  3. Yes, Its Jackie's 1995 film Thunderbolt. It was never released in US, I am surprised that it was actually shown on TBS.

I like it, but most of Jackie fans think its pretty bad. It doesnt have alot of fighting, but what it has is nicely done. The police station assault sequence that came out from nowhere, is also pretty good, and very violent.

Nice car chases and racing scenes, plus it also had some drama set pieces.

  4. That sounds great. For me, fighting isn't the only appeal of Jackie's movies.
    God is Rome

Especially for a Chan movie. He usually doesn't have guns in his movies, but the police station was just ripped apart in that scene. I never heard of the movie until today.

  6. It was directed by Gordon Chan, known for his action films, and he isnt an usual Jackie director, so thats why Thunderbolt is more darker and grittier than usual Jackie's fare. This and Crime Story, are Chans only films that got R rating.

  7. Crime Story the same as Police Story?

  8. No, Crime Story is stand alone Chan's film. Its a serious crime drama, very serious and dark, and without usual comedy bits. Directed by Kirk Wong.

  9. Funny, I was just about to make a thread about this movie and I planned to include just about everything you mentioned in your first post...

Anyway, I only caught about half of this, and I think that was enough for me to determine that this was pretty shitty stuff. The dub was awful, to begin with, and the fighting scene[s] were very un-Chanish. Did they use ropes in that casino fight? What was with all the -kick guy across room- stuff? And that camera blur stuff was irritating.

The race at the end was ridiculous. As soon as I saw the eighth car crash in a row, I knew only Jackie and that ponytail thug were goning to be left racing... Bad.

Way too ridiculous for my taste. It would have been nice to see the whole thing, however... Just because.

Oh yea: Jackie Chan sang the theme song? Yea, this movie IS weird.

  10. Jackie likes to sing. He's sung some other tunes for his movies too iirc.

Yup. And it was like they were racing in a videogame...for all that shit to happen, real world physics would cease to exist. Plus it made everyone else look like they had no idea how to drive. Not to mention that pony tailed guy was cutting corners around the track! He would have gotten DQ'd after the first lap!

Special mention goes to how they destroyed Jackies house though, that was pretty creative.
