Yeah, I hear you. Several of the other employees used to work for EB, and they tell me it can be corporate hell. No decision-making power whatsoever, and the managers are typically dicks with no experience or aptitude for the position, from what I hear.
alot of managers come from other companies that have nothing to do with games
or became friends with the DM
one manager in our district got the job simply because he met our DM at some big Mech convention and said he needed a job
no prior experience at all and hes made a store manager
corporate is beyond idiotic
for a company that makes millions and millions of dollars a year
they wont support anything newer than dot matrix printers in the store and they dont even support good ones
theyre still running everything off a shitty old dos Point of Sale that should have been dumped 6 years ago
the further up corporate you go the less they know whats really going on in the stores but they still are the ones to make descions
our store bassically carries our entire district in subs (we were number 2 in the company last year and i think well be this year also) but we still get yelled at if we dont get at least 70 meanwhile other stores are getting 5 and 10 and getting told theyre doing a great job
its half assed shit like that that can make a gamestop or eb employee really not give a rats ass
if you do well youll be told its not well enough and youll get repremanded from corporate
if you half ass it and do the bare minimum youll get told your doing well but try to improve in a very nice way
EB and Gamestop are way half assed companies
my current manager at funcoland got fired from EB not long back because when ringing up an employee he forgot to ring up an EGM (which isnt even in the inventory anyway) well some holiday help guy saw that and assumed it was ok to take any book of any kind and was taking a strategy guide and my current manager caught him some shit ensued and rather than fire the holiday help that was trying to steal they fired my current manager for leading on the holiday help some how
even though he never said taking strategy guides or magazines were ok
fucking lame ass shit like that
im not surprised when people steal from the company cause of that shit (not saying its right just that im not surprised by it) my last manager was a model manager untill the contstant yelling at because we were only number 2 in the company and not number 1 finally got to him after a year and he slacked off was close to getting fired took 40 games and 6 PS2s and quite
not syaing it was right but it doesnt surprise me that he did it
alot of people ive talked to in the company seem to have the feeling if they going to get fired (and it seems everyone does) for some BS reason they say they might as well have a good reason to be fired for
personally its not me yeah the job sucks and its a middle job till an animation gig comes along but im not gonna do that shit makes you no better than the idiots that still empty cases
but i think the company would experience a lot less customer service problems and probably alot less product lose if they would just treat their employees like actuall human beings
i mean shit theyre fucking me with health insurance because my past manager waited till past the date it had to be in to send in my health insurance forms i gave him a month earlier and the company seems to be bassicaly telling me too bad and i have to wait another 6 months for health insurance (doubt ill still be in the company then) some one else fucks up and i get fucked in the ass for it
This is why i am glad i do not work in Retail.

Tracer could match your stories and possibly beat them, but I know what you're talking about. I've never worked for those companies but I have friends who do and are still working there - the stories of jerdom and idiocy are incredible at the corporate level.
*gives all fellow retail employees a big hug*
Here's my explanation for 85:
I've found that sometimes the customers that have legitmate complaints get screwed royally by head-office or idiotic managers. On the other hand, every single customer that had an idiotic complaint (not getting a price match to American and UK prices, perceived (yet non-existant) rudeness on the part of employees,) always, and I mean, always get their way and MORE (like a $100 in gift certificates) if they scream loud enough. Trust me, I know. And I'm very pissed off about that!
X-mas is an aberation.
I hate this practise, and I hate sleazy sales people, but I DO TELL PEOPLE WE DON'T HAVE SOMETHING IN STOCK DURING X-MAS. Reason? Work duing x-mas in retail, when you're short staffed (meaning only people on til and nobody on the floor) and people, who don't give a damn about you, and the fact that you're already helping three people at a time, are asking about butt-fuck obscure PC game. I'm not lazy; I will search to see if something is in stock. But during X-mas, customer's ARE NOT reasonable.
It is corporate. I'm not proud of what I do (did), but it had to be done.
Retail does really suck, especially christmas, man i used to hate that stuff

Apok... if it's alright I'd like to use info from this thread (and, specifically, your list) as material for this book I'm writing called 815. Coo?
Heh...very funny.
Freedom is a road seldom travelled by the multitude...
Heh, I can relate to most of the stuff Apok said... worked for Toys R Us for a couple of years in their video game department.
I don't remember where I heard this... I think it was Something Awful, but I read this one story about customers shitting that beats them all: this one 9 year old kid at a toy store pulls down his pants in the middle of a store aisle and takes a shit right there and then.I got the impression from the story that the kid's mother didn't even give a damn that her kid did that...
I think it's time for an Apocalypse... stupidity overwhelming...
Edit: I found the page. It's at http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=446&p=5 , under SGTGAFSNA's entry.
