Thread: Metroid Prime Sequel Begins Development

  1. Metroid Prime Sequel Begins Development

    From IGN:

January 23, 2003 - Sources at Texas-based Retro Studios told IGNcube this morning that the company is in planning stages for a sequel to the hit GameCube adventure Metroid Prime. Executives at the company recently made an internal announcement to employees that the project has been cleared by Nintendo.
No details were given about the sequel, but one employee under the condition of anonymity did note that team members were throwing around the idea of including a multiplayer mode in the sequel.

No release date has been set for the project, but a tentative date of sometime in 2004 is likely.

We contacted Nintendo for official comment, but the company did not return our phone calls in time for publish.

We will of course be tracking the development of the game over the next several months. Stay tuned to the site for more.

  2. For multiplayer, it's gotta be co-op. It would be fun to be able to split up to look for items, and communicate back and forth (text or voice). You could cover a lot of ground that way...take bosses on as a team, help each other cross big gaps...share supplies if needed. That'd be real interesting, if your partner needs rockets, and you only have 3, what do you do? Spare one or keep them all?

when they said multiplayer, i don't think they meant "online multiplayer"..
that would be taking things way too fast for nintendo..
MK2 on XBLA plz - let the unfolding of gameplay begin!!

  4. Co-op isn't done as often as it should so I doubt it, It would be nice to have it here though.

  5. Good news. I'm also hoping for Co-Op play option. Co-op made Halo and Time Splitters 2 even more exciting to play.

  6. Explain exactly how co-op would work in Metroid...

I'm sorry, but two Samuses (Samii?) would be patently retarded, and as far as introducing a second playable character goes... not even Boba Fett could hang with Samus.

Add that to the fact that Metroid is very much a one-player experience... How would acquisition of items be handled in 2P mode? You need basically every item to make it through, each of you having a seperate half of the total items wouldn't work. And if you made it so when one player acquired an item, both players recieved it, that would make the game really easy... You could just camp out on either side of the map and wait for the other player to get something you need, then switch off.

I'm fine with just a fun little multiplayer fragfest being thrown in for shits & giggles, but integrating it into the main game simply destroys what Metroid is.

  7. Yeah, it's Nintendo so that also means we won't be seeing this game for 2 years. A lot of time for Nintendo to go online happy. Can always hope. I wouldn't be thrilled over a Metroid death match though. Nintendo should just start another franchise if they go DM style.

  8. i would also like to see co-op
    and disagree with bacon

I had doubts that retro could make a good 1st person game with metroid but they did it

so i have faith that they could make a good working co-op mode

of course deathmatch would be alright too

  9. Just make player 2 SA-X and have them hunt each other down or try to trap each other.

  10. Co-op for Metroid Prime 2 - Good idea.
    Frag fest? Bad idea.
