Thread: Question about Turbo Duo repair:

  1. Question about Turbo Duo repair:

My Duo is acting up recently. It won't read the majority of my CD games, including just about all domestic titles. In fact, the only games it'll play are Dracula X, Dynastic Hero, Last Alert, and Monster Lair. The cards work fine though.

The funny thing is, it'll read audio CDs just fine.

I was browsing TZD's site and was wondering about sending it to Retrogames for repair (if there is indeed anything broken). Has anyone ever dealt with them? Are they reliable?

I'm itching to play some Ys too....

Well like you said before your Duo has good taste.

Since TZD doesn't do it anymore I guess you don't have much choice, Didn't TZD give them their stamp of approval. I have only read that it takes a bit, though that may be wrong.

Maybe it's the Ys disk cuz the rest you said were working fine.

I hate paying for repairs with postage and all, but I guess it depends on how much the repair is, and if you would shell out money for a new one.

Yeah, my Duo broke a while back and I sent it into Retrogames.

They said that they would just send me a refurb system, but instead they actually repaired my system (yay! DracX Saves!)

However, they took their time doing it. It took about a month from the time I shipped it to the time I got it back. Granted, it was shipped ground both ways, so that's part of it.

Overall, I was very pleased with the job, my Duo works great. Retrogames gets a thumbs up.

  4. I remember a similar thread to this one. Someone testified that he sent his system (that he bought new from TZD) to Retrogames for repairs, and Retro sent him a different, older, refurbished system. Sounds shady as hell if you ask me.

If you still want to get it fixed, make sure you ask Retro beforehand exactly what they do with broken systems. Also you might want to jot down your Duo's serial number so you have some evidence in case they try to screw you.

Of course, if all you just want a functional Duo and don't care that it's the one you originally bought, then by all means send it in.

  5. If mine needed repair they better repair mine and send it back to me else I wont use them...

    That sounds shitty to me...

  6. Damn. I just don't understand this system!

It reads audio CDs just fine, as well as imports. It just refuses to read domestic CD games.

This is CD-ROM technology from 1992, you know. So what happens, exactly when you put in a domestic game? Does the SCD System say "Wait a moment..." then just not load it? If so, how long have you waited on the black screen?

I'm asking this because my own Duo (which I only bought from TZD last summer), on occasion, will "go black" for a little while while loading a game. I find that if I just wait a minute, the system will eventually load it.

Also, you could pop open the CD door and close it again. I was playing Star Parodier last week and the game froze on me when it tried to load the boss music. I opened then closed the CD door, and that fixed the problem.

  8. Some games go from the SCD screen to the BSOD and just stay there.

Ys loads the opening logo (NEC, Ys:Book I&II) then gives me the BSOD.

Audio CDs and imports load instantly. It's the damnedest thing.
