That's kind of lame. Just replacing the connector is easier and requires no soldering. Plus, it doesn't leave your NES with an awkwardly-placed cart slot. Ick.
is there a common, easy way to repair the nes yourself?
Yeah, Just buy the right replacement connector and there's no need for all that upside down backwards nonsense.
Once you get your replacement connector installed, when you play a game insert it in the connector but don't push it down, leave it in the up position and your NES will work flawlessly for years to come. When the connector is new it's got enough "bite" to do that. The constant bending and unbending of the leads is what wears out NES's so badly.
