New Alien Vs. Predator game in the works (updated- screenshots)

February 19, 2003 - The classic battle between Aliens, Predators, and Colonial Marines is about to be revived in Aliens versus Predator: Extinction, the new tactical strategy game co-published by EA and Fox Interactive. Developed by Zono Inc. (Metal Fatigue), the game will allow you play as any of the three species in a race to dominate the planet. Not exactly subtle, but hey, this is war, not a love story.
The actual storyline goes something like this: A small unit of Colonial Marines gets dispatched to planet LV-742 and discovers the presence of both Predators and Aliens. Obviously, the only choice the Colonial Marines have is to end the conflict and shoot for total universal supremacy. And so the battle begins.

Details about the game are scarce but we do know that each species will have specific strengths and weaknesses that will hopefully make for a balanced gameplay experience. As Colonial Marines, you will have to rely on standard military training and have access to the latest hi-tech weaponry from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. The Predators on the other hand can make use of their stealth ability, as well as their sophisticated hunting techniques. Lastly, Aliens will have the benefit of being able to attack in hordes to kill and impregnate the enemy with the always loveable facehuggers. Each species will also have variety of units that they can utilize such as the Alien Carrier which can carry facehuggers in groups, the Predator Hydra, or the Marine Sniper.

While we haven't seen what the game looks like, from its description and features, which includes ten upgradeable combat units per species, custom armies, and vision and weapon upgrades, the game may be RTS game rather than a first person shooter like some older Aliens versus Predator games have been. Adding to our hunch is the fact that Zono Inc. has only developed one other game, Metal Fatigue, and it too was an RTS. Stick with what you know...

The Aliens versus Predator license is an incredibly diverse and fertile one that can apply itself to a variety of game genres, real-time strategies included. With the lack of RTS games on both PS2 and Xbox, Aliens versus Predator: Extinction may be falling in arms more open than anyone expects. Stay tuned for more details as the game's summer 2003 release approaches.

Here I was, all excited at the prospect of finally having a console Aliens Vs. Predator first person shooter, and it looks like it's going to be a real time strategy game instead...might be cool, but I really want a console AvP FPS...

Hmm, Interesting. The closese RTS in the style of AVP was Blizzard's Star Craft, and it was a mighty fine game.

Lets hope this new AVP rts will be somewhat decent.

That is actually a great concept! The thought of being in control of divisions of Predators puts me in a frothy frenzy.

EA/Fox Interactive is the only downside for me, as those two pretty much guarantee no JPN version for me to play.

Oh, and expect screenshots to start showing up today. (They're watermarked so we can't personally use them.)

It looks like any other RTS but the camera angles shown so far are pretty close up to the humans, so I guess it's more about small troops than micromanagement.

Screw an Alien Vs. Predator RTS, I want Alien Vs. Predator done by Bungie! Hell, I'd even take booster disc for Halo that'd replace Elites with Alien warriors. I just want a good Alien Vs. Predator FPS.
