Last night I picked up Tactics Ogre for the GBA. I am a fan of the series as well as Final Fantasy Tactics. So far I am impressed with the game. Graphics are as good as FFT. Music is as good as you could expect from the GBA. The only Game play issue I find is that you only control one character. Unlike FFT where you have control over all members of your party. I played through 3 battles so far and have seen members of my party make moves that did not help the overall team. Example: Not attacking the leader of the opponent’s team or simply backing away from a fight instead of attacking.
Most reviews were around an 8, which may not do the title justice. I think the game is a bit underrated.
I also read that this game is getting hard to find, most stores like target and Wal-Mart never received it. Game stop has removed the title from their website, but you can still find it online at some other retailers like buy.com or ebgames.com
Chances are this title will be harder to find in a few months.
I swear I was able to move my characters in TO. I never got into it as much as others have. It moved too slowly for me. Perhaps when the TV adapter is released for GC I'll give it another go.
hmm. you should definately have full control of your entire party, aside from the occasional guest. i haven't started a new game in a while, so i don't remember if there are a few tutorial missions where you only control the leader, but that may be the case.
The AI for enemy and ally characters could be better, and the menu screen navigation is a bit clumsy, but it is a good SRPG. Definetley pick it up if you are a fan of the genre.
Yeah, it takes a while to learn, but it was the perfect kind of GBA game for me...not too hard, but lengthy, and turn based (useful when playing your GBA on the bus or at work).
The last boss was a bitch though, in the non-fun sort-of way.
edit: -and yeah, you get full control of your party. It's nowhere near as good as FFT (characters have like 4 skills max), but since you generally have a party of 8, plus commonly a cpu guest character, it still retains its own sort of strategic feel.
Tactics Ogre is a fantastic game. It's very polished and it's well made. I had a lot of fun with it.
It should not be that hard to find though, when it first came out it was impossible to find and I had to get mine on the internet. But nowadays I see it for sale at many stores.
I still haven't gotten around to picking up TO, since my parents didn't come through with it for Christmas. Now I am GBA-less until the GCN player is released next month.
