Thread: May the death threats begin... (Zelda:WW scores)

  1. Zelda 2? Apart from that every thing else is amazing.

  2. #62
Zelda 2 was awesome. The only game lacking the usual magic was Majora's Mask, which is still a good game. It's just way below Zelda quality standards.

  3. It wasn't until the advent of the msg board age that I realized that a sizable slice of the gaming public hates Zelda 2. This bizarre truth was further solidified about 3 years back when the staff of what was then gamers.com was voting on the best NES games of all time for some nostalgia feature. Suddenly, the room erupted into a group who loved The Adventure of Link (myself included) and another group who considered it 'unworthy of even being called a Zelda.' After talking with many such individuals over the years, I really have yet to figure out why they hate it so...Something in the water? Fearof change back in 88? People just can't handle a Zelda game with excellent control? Whatever it is...the two sides will never agree.

  4. "That's *entirely* too generous. I love shooters and Gunbird 2 sucked only a little less ass than the Giga Wing series. Thank goodness for Mars Matrix. Redeemed the little Sega box after all the other shooter travesty."

OK now that's too much. I agree the Gigawings are terrible, but Gunbird 2 is a fantastic game. Perhaps it's too hard for you?

Regarding Zelda, I think it's a great game. The theme song is back, the art direction and character animation is phenomenal, and the dungeons are better than ever. My only complaint would be that the sailing gets tiresome here and there. At least they tried something new though.

Good interview. I wonder what is going to be fine tuned for the US release of Wind Waker...

  6. I got the EGM in the mail today, and they did a pretty good job of justifying their scores.

Just look at FF8. Or Mario Sunshine. Or Vice City. Big names are immue to low scores, no matter what they do wrong.
Not everyone whored out on FF8, or something like Shenmue, you know.

Shenmue is hardly what I'd call an established mainstream franchise, hype aside. And almost the vast, vast majority did whore out on FF8.

Yea it is, but I actually didnt think OOT was that great. Maybe a 7/10, 8/10 at most. In fact I was never even compelled to finish it. It was brilliant in the beginning but just kinda lost steam.

This is in direct contrast to Link to the Past, or even Link's Awakening, which I beat multiple times each.

See I beat so few games that I am starting to measure how much I like a game if I beat it or not (last one I beat was NOLF in 2001). If I beat it I really like it. If not, its good but eh.

So OOT is good, but not good enough.

Anyway, EGM's the same magazine that gave GTA:VC 3 perfect 10's, which it DEFINITELY does not deserve. So go figure.
Both games are solid, as you said. But the fact that OoT gives more nostalgia to me. Both series are great, but because they're pretty much equal in gameplay, story, and exploration, OoT has not choice but to take the edge through atmosphere and soundtrack, right? Nothing more then the software limitations at the time.

If you take into consideration the LttP age factor, I think they're pretty levelled.

BTW, you're right. GTA: VC doesn't deserve anything more than a 9 in my opinion. And that's being generous.

Simply by naming this game Zelda, they pretty much guaranteed themselves a 9.0 in every mag, before any code was even written.
Might be true. But Mario has been said to be like that too and he got docked some with his new game. I would say needlessly, besides a few low rez textures in far corners of the island.

Thanks. I hadn't seen this before.
