It took me hours to learn how to make animated Gifs with ImageReady Now that I know how though I'm having fun with it. Anyone know the name of a good fire effect plugin? Also If I want to use water colors is there a special palet for that?

If you're into stealing software, or you're really rich, try Eye Candy(probably version 4000).

It's all about filters you wack-ass Photoshop wannabeeze...

Alright, check it out, you can do that in like 5 minutes:

This is about your friend Cntrl+J and Desaturation.

First look at the very background, basically just the characters. Come up with something like that:



I'm using a model I'm working on since that's the last thing I opened and I'm too lazy to dig for source material.

Next, bust out the text tool and slap down some text. Whatever font you want, whatever size, decide all that shit now. Got it...good..



Now, here's the curve ball. We're not using that text...at least not directly. You're going to hold down Cntrl and then CLICK on the layer with the text (in your layer pallete). This will create a selection from the text (marching ants, little dotted lines for the folks at home).

Make the layer with the artwork, in my case the turtle, the active layer (do this by clicking on the layers name once...make sure you're not holding cntrl still).

Now. Hold Cntrl and hit J. Name it "Cutout" just for ease.

This will make a new layer from the area in the selection, giving you something like this chumpy here...




I hid my background layer so you can see the type, otherwise it'd just blend in. Throw away your type layer leaving the background layer and the Cutout layer.

Now, with Cutout as the active layer (remember, just click on it once in the Layer's Pallete) hold down Shift Cntrl and hit U (or go to Image>Desaturate, surprise me) this will make the cutout layer b/w (technically it just removes the color). Depending on your source you may have to adjust the brightness and contrast of that layer (done by going to Image> Adjust Brightness/Contrast...I added 50 to both bright and contrst on mine). Fudge the numbers until it's how you want it to look.

Now all you gotta do is select black as your foreground ink (press D on the keyboard) and then Edit>Stroke and stroke it a few pixels. Inside, outside, depending on your type.



There ya go, add a dropshadow if you want, some scan lines if you want to be l33t and just lens flare the living shit out of it if you want to be UBER l33t.

Layers are very important, without them Photoshop is only a fraction as powerful.

But you know what is important that doesn't get as much play? Naming. Name your layers, man. Get in the habit it makes life so much easier.
