Thread: Cdtv

    Cdtv

Two years before 3DO, Commodore released the first of doomed "Multimedia" machines, the CDTV. Like the CD32 console which came out after it, it was an Amiga at heart.

Today I came across some neat finds at a second-hand shop. I bought Battle Ace for the SuperGrafx and Defender of the Crown for the CDTV for $2 a piece. I don't own a SuperGrafx or a CDTV but everything makes it to my collection eventually. I plan on getting a CD32 some day which is CDTV compatible.

Are there any CDTV owners out there?

  2. Emulatable? Any good games?

  3. I own one. Though, that doesn't make me a fan - I seem to have collected nearly every console over the years for some maddening reason beyond my comprehension.

  4. I really used to want one of these (of course, I also wanted that VIS system that Radio Shack sold, so...). Could never track one down, but I guess that's for the best.

PS.. Battle Ace is highly underrated, IMHO.

  5. If its Commodore, it has to be good.

I don't know if it has been emulated but the Amiga computer certainly has. CDTV games like Defender of the Crown, Xenon 2, Lemmings, etc. are pretty much identical to the Amiga ones.

    Here's a list of CDTV-specific games - http://www.cdtv.org.uk/games.html

It's not too great of a list but the machine can play Amiga games and there are many great ones. I think you need to buy separate add-ons to play them though.

As for Battle Ace, it is a good game. I have played it and other SuperGrafx games through emulation. Back in 1990, I really wanted a SuperGrafx but it wasn't financially possible. Since Strider never actually came out for it, it wasn't a big loss.

  7. I want a Supergrafx, if only for super robo-knuckle home defence. Only rednecks use guns.

    *sigh*

Do we have to go over this again? It's a V6 engine.

  9. I remember seeing demos of the CDTV at a nearby Amiga store, here in Dallas. They had this demo of a missile flying over the landscape, while a jet fighter was chasing it. Little did I know, at the time, that the scenes being shown, were actually FMV. I thought those were the in game graphics. I'm glad I did'nt fall for the demo, because my Amiga 500 did just fine, compared to the CDTV, which turned out to be one of the biggest flops in Videogame history.

  10. There should be a thread for dead/failed consoles like the Philips CDi or the NUon...

Those two platforms should never be in the same sentence. Tempest 3000 is better than any 10 games on the CD-i.

I'll second Yoshi. Tempest 3000 is rather easily worth the price of the DVD-N501 and the game DVD itself.

    Finished in 2010: 23 games (AC: 6, Amiga: 1, Gen:1, MSX2: 1, PC: 5, Flash: 1, TG16: 3, X360: 3, SNES: 2)
