Free Game Strategy Guides at Best Buy - almost free that is

Best Buy stores at least from what I have seen from time to time markdown some older overstock itmes to a penny a piece. So they might have about 20-30 strat guides for recently released games for all the next-gen platforms but since there is limited shelf room they have to get rid of overstock every once in awhile. So the have a cart of stacks of guides for a mere penny. They also might have some other stuff like a cd holder or cd but I have yet to see a game for 1 cent. I asked if the price was accurate and if there was a limit, but he said the price is correct and I can buy the whole stack. Of course I didn't as I do not have room for 50 or so odd strat guides for games I might not own.

So next time your at BB check for the blue shopping carts with penny items or check the strat guides pricetags.

  2. Sweet, thanks for the heads-up. I don't understand this markdown policy though - why not drop them to like $5 first?

  3. possibly because it's like remaindering. EB also marks down old strategy guides to 1 cent, and they don't do that for anything else. maybe toys. the markup on guides is probably really high, and it's not worth sending them back. bookstores just tear the covers off of remaindered paperbacks and send the covers back and chuck the books; maybe strategy guides follow this model instead.

  4. Best Buy's been doing this off-and-on since October. It's a pretty sweet deal.

Yeah, pretty sweet deal if you suck ass at games.

Actually, it does sound cool. I'll have to check it out next time I'm there. Guides are a nice little collector's item.

  6. I take the 1 cent guides from the EB, return them at Barnes and Noble (because you don't need a reciet for store credit) get fulll price for the guide, and buy a book I'll actually read!! last time I returned guides, I got $40 in store credit.

well, if i knew where one was i would. ill go check their website for a location around here....

  8. Thanks for the heads up, I'll make sure to check it out next time I'm in the vicinity of a Best Buy.

I walked into a Circuit City a year ago and picked up three strategy guides for a whopping $0.03. The games? NFL Gameday 2002 (PSX), WWF SmackDown! (PSX), and WWF Royal Rumble (DC). I read through the Gameday guide once and shelved it for good, but the two WWF guides had some nice pictures and an entertaining biography section for each wrestler.

In a related instance, I also bought a very cool Marvel vs. Capcom 2 guide for $0.99 a few months back at Funcoland.

  9. Sounds good...
