Thread: GameSpy on "The Dying Genres": Are they right?

  1. GameSpy on "The Dying Genres": Are they right?

Seems to me they hit the mark on most of them, even if half of them already are dead. But should shooters be on there? Sure, the genre still isn't too popular, but I don't see the genre dying as long as Japanese homebrew shooters are still being made.

  2. Read what they wrote dude:

Thanks to games like Ikaruga the Space Shooter isn’t quite dead yet, but they certainly ain’t the powerhouse they once were.
    Yes this is true.

Unfortunately, most modern gamers seem to find most Shmups repetitive, difficult, passé, and generally unrewarding. Thus, recent Shmups haven’t sold particularly well, and publishers have little interest in appeasing the relatively small, hardcore fan base.
Yes this is true (hell Im hardly a "modern gamer" and I find them to be repetitive, difficult, passe, and generally unrewarding).

    Sounds fair enough to me.

There are only two genres worth saving on that list. Shoot em up, and puzzle.

The other ones can fuck off.

  4. It's beating the game at such a difficulty that is truely rewarding, but in these more modern times people feel as though you should get some stupid token of appreciation for beating a game. Like some shitty alternate costume or some shit. We've been spoiled with useless shit like extra costumes and the like.

People still homebrew 2600 games, but that doesn't mean Atari isn't dead.

Oh, shut up. I dont play shooters because, well, you waste all this time beating the game on this high difficulty and you get rewarded with a "CONGRATURATIONS!". To me, useless shit is trying to play Battle Garegga at its max difficulty. So there.

In these modern times, people would like more substance to their games except for "control the lone ship that a nation foolishly sent to fight a massive mega-army, while figuring out a completely arbitrary scoring system..."

I mean, if you like it, hey, that's great, and there is no better test of ninja gaming skills than being good at a shooter... but don't look down on people who have the sense not to like this archaic genre.

  7. I like playing shooters, and just marveling at the bullets dancing across my screen, but I suck at them, and I don't see the point of investing effort into getting good at them.

Well then, whats the point of getting good at, or even playing any video game?
