Thread: Lunar: Silver Star Story

  1. Lunar: Silver Star Story

AS usual, I've just recently started playing a very old game that I probably should have got a long time ago. I picked up Lunar: SSS for 25$ at it's about games, good condition, no scratches, near perfect manual (That is the coolest manual I have EVAR seen) and have put eh 1 hour (Just finishing up in the White Dragons cave, yeah I take my time and eat while playing usually.) Battle system seems nice, mainly because of movement if you can't move far enough your turn is waste. Nice subtle change from Final Fantasy. Characters and plot sound cliche'd, which I can survive, and maybe it's not that cliche'd, not sure yet. Music Eh... seems decent, then I listened to the soundtrack and I found it delightful, but no more. Haven't heard enough of it yet though so I will wait for that.

So I'm just wondering, I did make a good choice? I remember hearing that it's a very good game, so I said "Hey $25 dollars, sounds good to me" and bought it. And of course I'm late to be experiancing this game, so I should probably be ashamed.

On another note: I picked up Tenchu 2 for $5, so I still have that to play as well.

  2. I have been a fan of the Lunar Series for some time. I bought both Lunar and Lunar 2 for the Saturn and PSX. I need to get the GBA Lunar Legends to play on the road. Graphics for the saturn it was impressive , for the PSX not so impressive. I found the story to be entertaining and Working Designs is the best in the business for their packaging of games and artwork on game cds. 25.00 is a good price to pay for it. I still see it in EB for about 35.00 used. Its a great investment too. You will be paying at least double for Lunar 2.

  3. Ah, I wasn't sure if it was the first or second of the series, thank you for clearing that one up for me. Working Designs is probably great for packaging and whatnot, because they release games late (As I've heard) I'll probably play some more of it when I get home today from school. I didn't know about the GBA one, but I'll probably grab it as well.

  4. You made a damn good choice. I preferred the Sega CD soundtrack to the new one, but that's just me. Over the course of the game you will care about the characters a great deal; not as much as Eternal Blue, but more than most other rpgs.

Lordmrw you are personally one of my favorite posters here (Probably because of your love of RPGs) and I'll definatly take your word on it. Unfortunatly I don't have the option of getting the Sega CD version, since I missed out on it. But the fact you say I shall care for the characters a lot, impresses me, if I do, this will fast be on my top10. Usually the most important part of an RPG to me is the plot, and character development (This is probably because I love to write stories which I never finish). Which is why Final Fantasy Tactics is my favorite game, since it's story is so fricken incredible.

I should pirate a bit of the Sega CD soundtrack, assuming I can. What would you say about the second one?

  6. Get it! The second one improves on everything in the first game, from the graphics down. Some of the music from the first one is reused, but luckily its the good tracks. The quest is even longer than the first one (its 3 discs), and in terms of character development, it might very well be my favorite rpg in that department. Its very hard in some parts, and will force you to really think about your strategy rather than just going off and leveling up. After you beat the game, there's an epilogue that adds another 5 -6 hours to the game, and gives you a second ending that is worth the trouble. You can find it at Best Buy for $20 most of the time, and its worth every penny.

  7. Lunar 2 was a dissapointment for me, I don't know why. It's still an excellent game with human characters, as opposed to the lame ass characters in other RPG's(read: skies of arcadia).
Plot maybe, but the characters are the best you're going to get in an RPG.
To each his own, but I prefer Grandia's. Suikodens, Tales and Persona's are also exceptionally well done. Xenogears and Valkrie Profile were pretty neat too.

    Here's my rundown of them:

Sega CD Lunar -- greatest RPG of all time (yes you do feel like you get to know the gang of Lunar and that's why you should be playing RPGs, plus the battle system is decent as well...the story is really well done -- yes it is cliched in some ways but very well executed...the music is so addicting, I still find myself humming it)...

Lunar PSX -- not as good as the Sega CD vers, but still very good -- the enemies are now visible and the difficulty is changed where enemies level depends on level of characters up to a certain point, I think over level 50...there is that terrible scrolling glitch that is also in WD's Arc disks as well -- anytime the screen pans any direction, it gets jumpy and gets a little funky along the top and bottom of the screen...very minor flaw though...yes 25 bucks is a very good price for this gem)

Sega CD Eternal Blue -- excellent follow-up to Lunar and new characters are almost as loveable as the first ones...

PSX Eternal Blue -- actually better than the Sega CD version because the game was so maxed out on the other system -- nice cut scenes and improved graphics, save system, etc...makes this one almost as good as Lunar Sega CD -- I played this one to death and maxed all characters to 99 -- kill those Ice Mongrels enemies in the White Dragon cave to gain tons of exp -- but you have to be high level to even kill them...

Yes definitely get the sequel and if you have time go for Arc the Lad collection as well -- the characters are good in this one as well...and for the price you will be playing the game forever (it's 4 games in 1)...
