Certainly, ninja's aren't soldiers and didn't engage in actual battle. Ninja's rely on stealth, deception and agility with good martial arts skills. Of course, since a ninja is a government chosen elite unit and their responsiblities more dangerous, demanding and diverse than a regular thief, their abilities should be reflective of such. But in a real 1 on 1 fight, a ninja without the element of stealth... is not guaranteed a victory...
i woudl actually say ninja have more in common with modern day commandoes than thieves. they are skilled at undetected entry, improvised weapons and silent hand to hand, modern day ninja, if they still existed would use firearms nowadays, some did even back then in attempts on nobunaga's life, primitive firearms, but cutting edge at the time.

as for the paladins, i think having a cause makes them stronger, lets say your troops are merenaries who are fighting for the coins, their troops have their entire worldview as one in which you are a ultimate evil that must be quenched, now who is fighting harder? conscripted fighters? mercenaries? or guys that beleive in their cause utterly. freedom is nice and all, but in military settings discipline trumps "freedom " every time. plus, since we are talking in a "game" world, paladins have low level clerical magic, which amounts to being able to heal themselves during a fight, and being able to raise their abilities. Fighters are nice and all, but no armor or weapons are going to keep you from wearing down while he just chips away and heals himself every other turn. besides, who has cooler enemies than paladins? they go after liches, dragons, vampires, anythting that they think represents pure evil they are down to kill, who is cooler than a guy who offs a vamp at night, then poilishes off a flame drake for breakfast, then heals all the wounds from those fights and gets ready for a brisk morning jog

edit: as for the ninja vurses pirate thing, in hand to hand, ninja had all those trick weapons, like that pepper blower, so i assume the ninja would just blind the pirate with pepper or flash powder and cut his throat.

Yeah, I believe ninjas in Japan were used as stealth agents for the government, much like a James Bond type person in this day and age.

And weren't samurais the ones to branch off from ninjas, not vice versa? I believe someone said that in another thread. *shrug*

Negitoro: I think the stealth aspect of ninjas is what makes them so cool. Sure, they may not win in a one on one fight against a pirate or something (which I don't necessarily think is true, but whatever) but they're still just a much cooler persona.

Well that's like, your opinion, man.

Oh I agree. I just felt like defending the pirates

Ninjas are damned cool. I do think that the role of a ninja has been warped far too much by anime, movies and comics though. *lol* I far more prefer 'real' ninjas and the techniques they used which spawned the fantasy versions. (e.g. espcaping with smoke... not disappearing; camoflague rather than transformation; hiding in tress rather than flying thru them)

As for 1 on 1 pirates vs ninjas... it's pretty much dependant on how good the pirate and ninja would be.

I think ninjas are actually agents commanded by a shogun. Ninjas were more commonly used for infiltration and stealing of secrets from enemies more than actual assasinations and stuff. I think Samurai's are like noble soldiers and generals. They're just like the loyal elite soldiers of that particular shogunate.

I don't know if I would say they are commandoes... possibly since a ninja's role seemed more dedicated to information gathering and scouting than actual combat and destruction of enemies. I'm sure the ninjas always employed SOME form of firearms but certainly they would shun actually killing someone with a gun back in ancient Japan.

Modern day, if a ninja would exist, I guess I'd say he'd be like Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell.

for the paladins, i think having a cause makes them stronger, lets say your troops are merenaries who are fighting for the coins, their troops have their entire worldview as one in which you are a ultimate evil that must be quenched, now who is fighting harder? conscripted fighters? mercenaries? or guys that beleive in their cause utterly. freedom is nice and all, but in military settings discipline trumps "freedom " every time.
Yes, I agree... in a pitched battle, when the paladins have a good chance of winning, their faith lends them strength. However, I was thinking more like, in a situation where overwhelming odds are presented... paladins could adhere to their cause and refuse to retreat. It was more a roleplayer type situation than a battle situation.

Like a paladin travelling with a typical RPG party : one fighter, mage, thief, etc encounters 3 dozen demons desecrating a church. If played in character, the paladin would disregard his life to protect the sacred structure or at least make an attempt to and then curse his weakness when he is beaten to a pulp.

It's not necessarily that he'd be WEAK... but that all paladins are essentially similar characters and their personalities mitgated for their obedience to an order of some sort. It takes away some of the pizazz of the class.

plus, since we are talking in a "game" world, paladins have low level clerical magic, which amounts to being able to heal themselves during a fight, and being able to raise their abilities.
Yes, I know about the low level magics etc. But as I said, it's not necssarily strength... but the 'coolness' factor. Paladins are still cool as 'holy knights' but certainly the few points I listed deduct points from their fun level. Other restrictions imposed upon them by their religion (e.g. mercy to enemies, foregoing of posessions, abstinence, etc) are also limiting the way they are supposedly supposed to act. Thus, paladins of the same order, start to conform and act alike...

edit: as for the ninja vurses pirate thing, in hand to hand, ninja had all those trick weapons, like that pepper blower, so i assume the ninja would just blind the pirate with pepper or flash powder and cut his throat.
Trick weapons are not necessarily employed by a ninja. I'm not even claiming I know what an 'authentic' ninja weapon is. But I assume for instance, a lot of times, he leaves his katana behind in favor of a short dagger. In addition, I'm not sure if ninjas are bound by honor rules which so much of Japan seemed to be -- honoring the opponent and fighting fairly. It would seem far more in the character of the pirate to pull out the dirty tricks.... or a gun.
