Thread: If you could dropkick one member of the gaming industry in the face, who would it be?

  1. Yeah, give Romero some credit. A lot of the bad things that happened to him are equally Eidos's fault (i.e. the ad campaign) in addition to Romero's lack of leadership.

[edit follows] By the way, thanks for the little nudge about Kelly Flock (I salute my A.D.D.-like lack of reading skills). As for whoever asked where he is now, I want to think he's working in some development division of Sony, like the MMORPG studios or something like that. Can anyone confirm/deny that?

  2. ISD (Ion Storm Dallas) wanted to advertise Daikatana in a way that represented the LAN party experience according to one former employee. The "...make you his bitch" was supposed to reflect that. It was one of a string of mistakes made on the road to Daikatana which was a brillant vision which failed very very miserably. John is a creative guy and at Id he has Carmack behind him to keep things moving forward and never forgeting that a game has to be made from it. Id's games have been by-and-large static since Romero's departure. The creative drive left with him (though Doom 3 looks like it's back). Romeros brilliance as a game designer is happered by his desire to innovate and work as freely and as losely as possible. He had his eyes on the prize but he never once looked at the rocky road 'neath his feet. It's interesting to compare ISA with ISD. Thier ambitions were the same, thier methods were polar opposites though. It shows when compareing Deus Ex with Daikatana. Eidos could not be faulted with the exception of not overseeing Mr. Romero.

    Now...

Flock is a shrewd businessman and an honest one too. His honestly makes gamers hate him which I am perfectly sure he is fine with because he knows what he is doing. Football coaches are not going to put thier ear to the stands to determine what thier next play is even though it's the crowd that pays his bills. He's there to do what he has to do. When he said "We don't listen to our customers, gamers do not know what they want" he is right in the sence he was talking. Try getting a good concensus from the whole of EQ players out there on what Verant/Sony should do with the game and try getting some good thesible Ideas out of that majority. It's not going to happen. Too many people want too many things and most all of them are unreasonable so he just burrows down and does what he thinks is best and all of the sudden - he's a wealthy wealthy man. Honest to a fault perhaps.

  3. I'm on the Peter Moore bandwagon.

  4. Moore inherited a sinking ship. The lie is a lie and I suppose it's justified but yeah... you gotta say somethings when you're trying to lead a company. That last part also goes for Flock who works for Sony Online / Verant snapper.

I would say Yu Susuki needs to retire. He's too full on himself and I belive he's as soon quit as conceed that his concepts are neither good nor profitable by his own making and NOT the fault of Sega and thier Marketing temps.

    Others mentioned:
Itagaki - I think he's rad and has a good philosophy on design. I don't have the same tastes as he does but I like when he says "if it's not cool, then there is no point" because I think there is ALWAYS room for completly rad games out there that just make you say, "woah, cool!" Maybe some don't think he delivers on that but I can see it. DOA might not bet the deepest sea of the seven but it certianly comes off as cool when you see the moves and the way they are performed by you. It's fun, with others it's a nice little challange for a bit. Ninja Gaiden looks to be capitializing on the cool-factor as well. I'm all for it. As for DOAX, well, appearnltly - Boobs are totally bitchin. That's the only harm Itagaki has done. I see no fault in it.

Molyneux: Prowd of himself for sure. But again I like his design style for a whole other reason. He seems to me the opposite of the spectrum from Itagaki actually. I don't think B&W delivered on being the most revolutionary game ever but it did do things diffrently and it wasn't a complete pile. It shows strenth in a developer to be able to beat your own path to a game and still have it turn out half way decent (back to Daikatana which didn't). Fable seems to take a diffrent route than B&W so we'll see how that goes. I think without Molyneux the industry would be all the more stale. He's one of the few who keep it interesting.

Vic: Heh... he's a 'tard but no one else seems to be doing what he does. There's room for a company like WD but Mr. Ireland uses his mouth too much.

Rubins: All that hate for him comes from controversial PR bullshit. He said "the Dreamcast is a turd" for the same reason Sega has Sonic roasting Crash Bandicoot dolls over a spit. It's shakes things up and any media is good media. It makes people more aware of you and what you're doing. It's like Howard Stern. In reality, Rubins no less a great developer and no less a good guy I am sure. I mean, the lead designer for Smilebit talked smack on the PS2 when JGR came out. It's not that he HATES it or Sony but because he works for Smilebit which works for Sega and NOT Sony. It's all the same. That's something to remember about all figures in the industry. Flock, Moore, Itagaki, Molyneux, Gates, Fries, Susuki et al. They're all working on a product in some way. They want to sell it so they'll do and say what it takes. All the way from 989 being better than EA to Sonic roasting Crash to Rubins to Dreamcast:"You're a Turd" to Molyneux throwing down the gloves against every other RPG ever made. It's all a matter of putting your PR proof goggles on and sort out the bullshit from the genuine information.

  5. About Victor Ireland:

I don't think people would hate him as much if he didn't act like WD was creating the games they publish.

In interviews, he speakes as if they are completely programming games like Lunar for PSX, or Vanguard Bandits when in reality they are only doing translation work and making neat puppets for people who pay $10.00 up front

That would be a lot of drop kicking But I'm with you on this one, even Metal Gear Solid which sold much better in the USA then it did in Japan and still they where the only ones who got a premium package of Metal Gear Solid 2... even the Europian release got a PS2 MGS2 system bundle but we got jack shit, that's just not right

  8. I'd also dropkick the head of Atlus USA for bringing over for Sonys and Nintendos first party games, when they could have brought over one of their own masterpieces.

I agree, while I don't hate what they brought over they should really focus on thier own games cause they have some good ones and sadly they seem to overlook that when it comes to domestic releases... I never relized what a small branch Atlus USA was until last years E3

A week after the Xbox announcement- "Listen, Sega is looking to the future and we see a strong synergy with the Xbox brand, Shemnue 2 is a vital part of that."

Honestly, I'm over this, but I can't stand a bold face f****** lie. *-neo
