Ick-ah-roo-guh. Oh, and for good measure- sah-kay, because I heard it pronounced that way in subbed anime first. Hell, if I'd read it first it might have come out "sayk", because that's how it's spelled.

Nope, it was never finished. Those screens are among only a handful ever released (about five or six total, I think).

Japanese students dont (or shouldnt) care about how many characters they know, or brag about it... when it comes to reading Japanese, either you know all of them (or pretty much all of them), or none at all. Knowing 270 isn't that much different from knowing 20. You can't really read a book or newspaper by knowing 300, or 500, so why bother bragging about it.

I mean, congrarurations, you know 270 out of what, 2600?

diffusionx, are you really an asshole or is this just a friendly, sarcastic ribbing, like what I wrote? The newspaper list is 1,945 if I remember. What you wrote is true (and you didn't even mention the "name only" readings), but there are always dictionaries for that, right?

Of course I know about "enryo," but I didn't think anyone would really care when I mentioned a number. Personally I keep count for fun, as it is one of my hobbies. And unlike 90+% of the people in my Japanese 1 class, I didn't take the class because of anime or videogames. At least I find Chinese characters interesting... so interesting I went and bought a book called "The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy." 700 is my short-term goal, since according to some reviewer on amazon.com, it's then when I should get one of those famous "Nelson" dictionaries.

I'll end with this, which I found on one of my favorite sites:

Now a bit of statistics. If you have learned 500 Japanese kanji (out of the 2000 required to read the Japanese newspapers), you can read 60% of the entire Japanese dictionary (excluding proper names). How is that? The first 500 kanji represent the most used kanji in Japanese and many of them are used in hundreds of Japanese words. If you have learned 1000 kanji, you can read 85% of the Japanese dictionary (excluding proper names). Kanji after the first 1000 are mostly used in very few words (often, it is only used in 1 word).
