Having a Pro resurface your games - Updated with a Question and a note for MN TNler's

I have a personal policy that I won't buy used games with deep scratches or many nicks at all. I may buy a lightly scratched game still if it is hard to find or rare.

Anyways I was at a Gamestore the other day and asked to see the disc, it was slightly scratched so the clerk offered to fix it. They had a machine that looks like it sharpens tools but with some covering on in. In a few seconds it was flawless again. They said they would fix and cds I wanted to bring in for 50 cents to a Dollar. Interesting as this seems to be a good thing, I've heard too many bad things about Game Doctors so maybe this is a solution? Some Gamestops I believe will resuface your disks for a small fee too.

I suppose there is always a risk but a place like that may come in handy.

Anyone pay for someone else to resurface your games?

  2. we used to have the machine to do it they made us send it back though i dont know why

but anyway if you had me resurface your disk 99.9999% of the people out there wouldnt have been able to tell it wasnt a new game

i mastered how to use that thing

    wish we still had it

hell wish i had mine own ive passed up alot of hard to find games for cheap prices cause they were scratched

ohhhh and the Gamedoctors are evil evil evil machines

  3. I have never had this done... Usually if it looks playable i will buy it used... I try not to but sometimes i just cant afford the extra money for a new game, expecially if the game is really old..
And Why are Game Doctors evil? I have seen so many infomercials about them! EB used to play them repeated in the store! hahaha
You can never be one of the dead, because something that has no existence can have no community.

  4. Different people will swear completely opposite stories, some horrific others postive, on the effectiveness of the Game Doctor. But such an almost down the middle even split makes me wary of the risks associated with it, seeming like there was a 50/50 chance I'd either successfully resurface the game or screw it up even further.

Thankfully I buy almost all my games either new or in mint condition used, but in the rare instance I picked up a HTF used game that's seens some abuse, if it's playing fine and not skipping, I'll just keep it as it is rather than take the risk of resurfacing it.
    omg TNL epics!

  5. Disc scratches are weird things. My copy of Raiden Project is so scratched up that I'd never buy it in a store without testing it first. Thing is, it works perfectly.

On the other hand, my SOTN's only scratch is a relatively small one on the outside of the disc, yet several of the music tracks skip like crazy.

I also own two discs that have been through a Gamedoctor - Ys III and Exile, both for TurboGrafx. Both work fine, and cost me VERY little to obtain.

I hope EB has one of these machines... there are no Gamestops where I'm plan to relocate.

  6. Chemist: The Game Doctor is far less reliable than a professional resurfacing service, mainly because of the fact that it scratches up a CD or DVD quite heavily during its resurfacing process. The manual that comes with the Game Doctor recommends that you use a piece of felt included with the device to minimise any scratching created during resurfacing, but all it will end up doing is just scratch up your discs even more heavily.

Professional resurfacing evenly shaves a thin layer of plastic off of the surface of a disc, which means that it's restored to a near-new condition. It won't leave any scratches or grooves in a disc, which means it's far less likely to cause problems than the Game Doctor is. I agree with John, the Game Doctor is evil.

  7. my local gamestop sends all their games away to be fixed, sucks to be me I guess...

  8. I love the Game Doctor, for me, it revitalized my Saturn library when I bought a ton of games from a friend for $10 that were all scratched up. These games worked like brand-new after using the GC.

  9. a few years ago, i picked up a used copy of klonoa that wouldn't play properly. choppy music/video, if the game booted at all. without knowing any better, i bought a gamedoctor and tried it out. worked like a charm.) looks like i got lucky, eh?

  10. You think that's lucky? One of the Saturn games I bought from the friend was Dragon Force, game was scratched up a bit, and wouldn't work. I bought a GD, and it worked like a charm, up until recently when it sorta stopped working in the middle of play.
