Psikyo shuts down
There are very few studios remaining that do nothing more than churn out great, arcade shooters. There's Cave. There's Raizing. And There's Psikyo. For sure, a couple other developers dabble in the art but none match the quality of the three listed above.
But now, there are two.
In the newest issue of Japan's Arcadia Magazine, a publication devoted solely to covering the arcade scene, an ad was taken out to announce the demise of Psikyo, the beloved creator of the Gunbird series, Strikers 1945, Zero Gunner, and a host of others. Obviously, arcades aren't as crowded as they once were and companies don't make as much money as they once did. As a result, smaller developers like Psikyo don't stand much of a chance. It's truly sad to see such a legendary group go.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about right now, you can go to your local retailer and pick up a copy of either Sol Divide or Mobile Light Force. Sol Divide was developed by Psikyo and released on the PlayStation and the Saturn in 1998; it's a horizontal shooter set in a medieval environment. Mobile Light Force was actually renamed by publisher XS Games. Don't be discouraged by the terrible cover art! Mobile Light Force is actually the hallowed Gunbird, a once-arcade shooter that was ported to the PS and Sega Saturn. It's an incredible game that, for the low price of $10, should be in anyone's PSone collection. I, personally, am in the midst of working on reviews for both games right now, so make sure you look forward to those.
