"Gashapon" is the name for these cute little capsule toys. In Japan, as I'm sure you're well aware, capsule toy dispensers litter the country side. You can get characters from many different games, animes, and mangas for the cost of 100 yen. The word, "Gashapon," is actually onomatopoeia for the sound of the capsule dropping out of the machine.

That is the most interesting thing I've read in a while.

I always wondered what they called those capsule toys. Being as far away from Japan as someone can and still remain on Earth, my only exposure to Gashapon was through Shenmue. I spent so much fucking time pouring Ryo's cash into those things.

Me too...usually at the expense of other "more important" things, like boat tickets. Who the Hell needs to leave Japan when I still have the whole Sonic gang to collect?!
