There's more and more voyeuristic media out there, and people are eating it up. I think people have always been like this; it's just that now it's becoming more public. Twenty years ago something like this would never have made national newscasts, even with a videotape.

People do this to themselves because they want attention and have low self-esteem (see: Jackass, etc).
