Thread: Should Phantasy Star return to its offline roots?

  1. First off, I have to say that Skies of Arcadia is one of the best RPG's of all time. It is pretty damn close to being one of my favorite games of all time as well.

What do I like about it?

    1. I think Pirates are cool. So I liked playing as a Pirate.
    2. I liked having an airship from the beginning of the game.
    3. I loved the open ended exploration that the air ship provided.
    4. I loved the characters. I found all the main characters to be quite likeable and they added tons of personality to the game.
    5. The ship battles.
    6. The ship dungeons.
    7. I liked how I could just fly around the overworld.
    8. Skies of Arcadia was so damn good that Nintendo ripped it off when they made Zelda The Wind Waker. They just swapped the sky for the ocean....
    9. The Dark Rift
    10. The villains were too cool...especially Bellena, Ramirez, and Vigoro
    11. Speaking of Vigoro the games sense of humor was welcome.
    12. Aika
    13. Fina
    14. Gilder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    15. Last but certainly not least Skies of Arcadia contains one of the best lines in video game history that is said by one of the coolest characters in video game history, Gilder. I believe he says something to the effect of "Women are like sun sets...they're beautiful but there will be another one tomorrow." This game rocks!

Overall, Skies of Arcadia is just a quality game. Its the only RPG that I have played through more than twice and I guess that is saying something.....so all this Skies of Arcadia bashing needs to stop. It sounds like its the new game that is cool to hate or something.....

As far as Phantasy Star goes....HELL YEAH times one million it should be a real full fledged off line RPG. Phantasy Star ONLINE wore out its welcome about 2 years ago and these rehashes are making me sick. They need to stop being so lazy and make an actual RPG now...

  2. Skies=poop

yeah, usually when you think something is cool, you like playing as it too.

    3. I liked having an airship from the beginning of the game.
Which was ruined by the random battles.

    The ship battles.
That's the best part of the entire game.

I liked how I could just fly around the overworld.
I like that in Final Fantasy VI as well, doesn't make it special.

Skies of Arcadia was so damn good that Nintendo ripped it off when they made Zelda The Wind Waker. They just swapped the sky for the ocean....
With no random battles. For saying that Nintendo ripped it off I think you should punish yourself. Exploration isn't something that can really be ripped off, it's a given.

    The Dark Rift
    The Great Rift (Grandia 2)

    10. The villains were too cool...especially Bellena, Ramirez, and Vigoro
    11. Speaking of Vigoro the games sense of humor was welcome.
    12. Aika

I take it you liked the characters.

    He's a very cliched character.

  4. Grandia 2 was much better. Skies just took the flaws of the orignal Final Fantasyand ff8 are made them look a hundred times worse.

Final Fantasy 9 was released around the same time, and aimed for a similar lighthearted fantasy feel. IMO that game demolishes SOA.

  5. yeah...
Freedom is a road seldom travelled by the multitude...

They said it was the series finally, not the end of the series. Look at Tomb Raider, for an example of this. They could easily do side stories, to the Phantasy Star universe. Maybe the story of the planet Ragul after the enemy was destroyed.

I'd love to see Phantasy Star V, with a battle system simular to Grandia's. The random battle style of RPG gaming, has become stale. Grandia did a great job of eliminating most of that.

  7. I voted for yes.

The whole PSO thing is saturated. Lets make an awesome single or multiplayer experience out of the franchise, it would be amazing... given they did it right, of course.

I had fun with his post. He's right. Skies was a weak Final Fantasy rip off with a stupid ending and shallow characters. I can't even count the number of plot points/world elements they stole from FF.

And those ship battles were stupid - cool idea, horrible, horrible execution. "Go above the enemy/go below" - how am I supposed to know which matters? The ships never actually do anything! They just float around each other in meaningless, prescripted circles that you have to watch for 15 minutes before you're allowed to make your next move.

I wasted 56 hours of my life trying to like this game, and the only way I can get even for that is by spending an additional 56 making fun of its lameness.

It's all about balancing the yin and the yang.

You played for 56 hours but didn't like it? I played for 45 and loved it. You really gave it the benefit of the doubt and for that I salute you.

    /me salutes StriderKyo.

I didn't really enjoy Grandia 2. It seemed too much like the first but with a horrible plot and about half the length. Great battle system though.
