Thread: Beyond Good & Evil - Official Thread

  1. Beyond Good & Evil - Official Thread

I read IGN's impressions, and I'm curious what the TNLers who've tried BG&E at E3 think about it. Anyone?

Beautiful graphics aside, I think the concept is also really cool, and I like Ancel's idea of evolving Jade from a photographer to an investigator of truth:

Q: Compared to the plays of action/aventure which one can find today, how Beyond Good and Evil hopes to dissociate mass?

A: When one begins the title after y to have played one to two hours, one starts to find oneself in a universe which has a certain coherence. At the beginning of the play, it appears that there is a conflict, a war. There are thus information. When one continues to explore this universe, it proves that there is a form of propaganda so that people enrôlent themselves, to take part in this war, etc... And the scenario turns around this aspect. Beyond that, there is another truth, a conspiracy. In fact this type of scenario, of structure in which one has a progressive installation of the world is a little similar to that of a film with a stake which starts to be set up in a decisive way. It is rather unusual since in the plays one always tries to say: "it is to Him the Good, it is to him the Evil" whereas here one a little took with grain-hair these concepts for saying that there is another thing beyond that. Moreover one dissociates oneself directly, I think, with the fact that the principal weapon of the player, Jade, is a camera which is the testimony of what it will be able to live and that it will report to the population. It will take photographs in places dangerous and compromising to present the truth. The objective of the play is clearly to bring the truth through photographs. Photography, the report, thus suppose activities of displacement, investigation purely suitable for the adventure, i.e. to meet people, to have contacts. The universe of the play extends at the same time on the level scenaristic and on the level of the possibilities and the camera which is at the beginning a means of gaining money becomes a way of bearing the truth. It is a less concrete concept, less mechanical. After there is also the overlap of kinematics with the phases of play to give the feeling of a coherent Whole, of the same cinematographic experiment. There is a search which is not only the discovery of the magic stone or the release of the princess but which is to include/understand the history, it why of this history because she has a direction, a reason and all that are mixed with the gameplay, the photograph.

  2. It's decent but nothing has really grabbed me in yet except for the art style.

However, keep your hopes up since I only played it for a few minutes and the controls are rather complex. I took over in the middle of one level and I was escorting this giant pig man to the end of this hall (combat is very accessible and easy to control, but that's because Jade is a bit slow but very steady) and I couldn't figure out how to get the pig man to open the door. The Ubi Soft booth rep. then offered to let me play a camera level but I had no idea what the significane of the camera was at the time and was a bit boring since most of the level was crawling in vents kicking the rats.

I haven't posted these impressions on the main page since I have an appointment with Ubi Soft later in the evening and I'll get a much better feel for the game there.

I'll look forward to it. Thanks.

  4. I hope this game is as good as I, um, hope it will be.

The one video I downloaded was a shooter sequence against a big worm guy. It sounds like there's a lot of variety, which could be good or bad depending on how it's handled. Just as another example, IGN also says this game is playable:

  5. So... how about that new look?

I think the old look was better.

She used to look like Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin, but now she's just another Lara Croft. Oh well. I'll buy it anyway.

The worst thing they could have done was change her appearence. Aw, crap! I'll still buy it, too.

The visuals are wonderful, in my opinion.

I agree. I liked the old style better. It's like they're trying to doll her up and make her appear "hip" or "edgy" now. On the bright side, at least they didn't try to make her look like a scantily-clad slut, like so many female characters in video games.

  8. Well crap, they totally trashed her there, didn't they? From attractive female to "hip" bimbo in a few simple tweaks, what on earth are they thinking?

Sqoon, you have contacts with them judging by your appointment and all, could you beat on them until they realize they're stupid? Thanks.

  9. I like the redesign. I didn't see what was wrong with the original, but nothing bothers me about how they changed her. I think she looks better than Croft. The game as a whole looks really good, I'll have to keep my eye on it. What's due out first, this or Sphinx?

My guess is that it was the focus group's fault because the change occurred so late in the development cycle. Ubisoft made the same 'edginess' makeover to Rayman 3, and now I think they're poking their noses into Ancel's project.

That's exactly what she looks like now.

As I said I'll buy it anyway. I'm not looking forward to much else in Oct-Dec, and I need to buy something--anything--every 2 weeks to get my gaming fix. Nevertheless I'm sad that this had to happen to such a cute character.
