Masters of Doom

The new OPM has alerted me to a book I was unaware of: Masters of Doom by David Kushner. It's a Romero/Carmack history.

Is it out yet? Has anyone read it?

Yep, it came out May 6. Thanks for reminding me, I forgot about it.

I'll get it tomorrow and let you know how it is after I read some of it.

Gonna get this next pay-day. According to PC Gamer, some of the writing is suspect (author has a tendency to use played out cliches a tad too much) but it's worth a read.

Eh, I think its good to see a videogame-related book finally move away from the "broad history from SpaceWar! to now" style. It's been done to death, and actually nobody needs another one of these thanks to Phoenix and The First Quarter. Even that book Supercade doesnt interest me because shit I know everything already in it.

If I have to read about how Nintendo got started by making hanafuda cards one more time...

None of these books seem to have really great writing, but hopefully these ones will get more professional writers interested so we can get better-written books. For now, though, these suffice.

I finished this a few days ago and would recommend it to anyone that's interested in the subject. It's written like a traditional novel, and it's extremely compelling. I breezed through it in one day. Full of information I had never known previously, and it thankfully quickly goes through the Columbine/violence/guns crap we've already heard a million times so that it can keep the focus on the real story.

Excellent. My local library is getting it soon. I'm sure I'll end up buying it anyway like I do with almost every other game history book.

Has anyone in Canada seen it in stores? Chapters had it in their computer but not in stock.

GI has been raving about the book. I'm sure it's worth a read. I'm going to check the library in the next couple of days.
