Thread: The Official TNL MMA/K-1 Thread

  1. Moving on to less serious matters...

UFC is on PPV this Friday. Who's getting it?

  2. Here's the card:

    UFC Interim Light Heavyweight Title:
    Chuck Liddell vs. Randy Couture

    Heavyweight Bout:
    Tank Abbott vs. Kimo

    Heavyweight Bout:
Vernon "Tiger" White vs. Ian Freeman

    Heavyweight Bout:
    Frank Mir vs. Wes Sims

    Light Heavyweight Bout:
    Vitor Belfort vs. Marvin Eastman

    Middleweight Bout:
    Matt Lindland vs. Falaniko Vitale

    Heavyweight Bout:
    Pedro Rizzo vs. Tra Telligman

    Lightweight Bout:
    Yves Edwards vs. Eddie Ruiz

This Liddell Couture thing ought to be good. Has Randy slimmed down? Has Chuck bulked up? Or are they just throwing weight classes out the window for this. I bet it'll be a great fight with Liddell coming out on top. Where is Tito Ortiz?!

I wouldn't pay to view Tank or Kimo. I don't care.

Vernon White vs Ian Freeman ought to be interesting. A salty veteran fighting a hard punching relative newcomer. I can't call it.

I hope Wes Sims beats Frank Mir. I respected Mir's strange ankle lock victory over Tank but I cringe every time he takes a microphone. He's got a foul attitude and I hope he gets shut up.

Vitor Belfort eh? I look forward to this fight. I don't know much about Marvin so I can't call anything on this one either. This obviously has the potential to be a great fight.

I don't know who Falaniko Vitale is but I was mighty impressed with Matt Lindland's fighting spirit in his recent match against Phil Baroni. This is another I can't possibly call but I look forward to seeing Lindland fight again. He's one of the hard workinest wrestlers I've watched outside of Japan.

A Rizzo/Telligman rematch? I'm going to give the prefight nod to Pedro Rizzo. I haven't seen Telligman in ages but he's never been a fave of mine. His showing in his previous match with Rizzo was less than stellar and while I don't think either of them has aged as well as they'd have liked to, I think Rizzo's the smarter fighter.

Once again I'm in the dark. I don't know Eddie Ruiz. I like Yves Edwards though and having seen him fight, I have to believe that this will be another great fight.

At first glance it doesn't seem like much(to me) but after a little more thought, I think this sounds like a pretty explosive card for a UFC event.

Whetehr or not I see it Friday is up in the air. It's Columbia City Beatwalk that night and since this could possibly be the last Beatwalk while I'm living in Columbia City I might feel compelled to drag the speaks out on the porch and spin records for the neighborhood. It was fun last year

  3. Chuck walks around at about 230 and drops the rest so he will probably not cut as much weight and Randy will drop more weight than usual. Should be a great fight.

I'll pay for it if your Brother will host us for the even Pa. All I ask is that he lets me record it

  4. PRIDE 26 update:

Ricardo Arona has dropped out of his PRIDE 26 match with kickboxer Alistair Overeem, claiming illness. Mike Bencic has been named as Arona's replacement.

When I look up Bencic's record at Sherdog.com, it lists him as 0-0-0. Weird...

EDIT: In other news, the matchups for the PARIS round of K-1 World Grand Prix 2003 were announced last week. Don't know how I missed that one. Anyhoo, its shaping up to be a fine card:

K-1 WORLD GP 2003 IN PARIS
June 14th, 2003 at Palis Omnisports de Paris Bercy, PARIS, FRANCE

    Tournament Matches:

ALEXEY IGNASHOV (Belarus) vs. TONY GREGORY (France)
PAVEL MAJER (Czech Republic) vs. ALEXANDER USTINOV (Russia)
CYRIL ABIDI (France) vs. AZIZ KHATOU (Belgium)
PELE REID (UK) vs. CHALID "Die Faust" (Germany)

    Non-Tournament Matches:

ERNESTO HOOST (Holland) vs. MARTIN HOLM (Sweden)

JEROME LE BANNER (France) vs. ???

Except for the 3/30 Saitama show, this looks to be the best K-1 event of the year thus far! Why Le Banner's opponent hasn't been announced is beyond me, but I'm happy to see his return to the ring.

    Randy's dropping down to LHW.
    Where is Tito Ortiz?!
Officially there's a contract dispute, but alot of people think he's scared of getting KTFO by Chuck.

And how can you not like Rampage? He's the fucking man!

    EXACTLY!

  7. " nigga look like Vandalay...."

    "Neva shoulda touched me mothafucka...."

No fucking class. Period. I like his big slammin' fight style just fine but he acts like an inexcusable dumbutt. Winning is certainly not everything to me. Sportsmanship and "proper" attitude in the ring and on the mic are also very important to me.

I'm definitely stoked to see Abidi and LeBanner fight but who the hell knows when I'll get to see this particular K-1 event?

  8. No class is his "act". Whether he actually has class or not, he is the king of the entertaining interview and has the charisma of a WWF wrestler.

Love him or hate him, he has personality. When MMA becomes boxing (AKA all business and no personality, Tyson excluded) I will stop following it.

  9. Kazushi Sakuraba has personality. Murilo Rua has personality. Heath Herring has personality. Don Frye, Frank Shamrock, Chuck Liddell, Bob Sapp, Takanori Gomi, Duane Ludwig, Kaoru Uno, Mirko Filipovic, Ricardo Arona, Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera and Doko Mishima all have personailty. I'd be willing to bet Technosphile could create a list just as long. I don't think there's any shortage of personality in MMA at this point.

Jackson does the tired and uninspired thug thing. Not unlike alot of the jerkoff crack dealers and big crips in my neighborhood. In my humble opinion that's not personality. His promo that you showed me is inarticulate at best and his attempt at a joke at the end there is lower than the previous lowest common denominator.

Funny thing is, while I know it'll be a seriously nasty fight, I couldn't give a rat's ass who emerges victorious in the upcoming Jackson/Silva match.

  10. I'm gonna sound like a rube here, but I think his antics are quite amusing. He's playing a role, much like Sakuraba or Bob Sapp, and the Japanese fans relate to that.

He is playing the role of the "thug from the hood" but he is clearly a goof about it. Download the new sherdog.com highlight video for some choice silly antics where he talks about his jerry curl growing up and such.

Maybe it just tickles my funny bone in a different way, but I find his antics very amusing.

I like both Silva and Rampage, but like you, I have no preference as to who wins, as per usual.

PS: Your avatar also makes me crack up.
