    DOS sound issue

This never used to be a problem on my PC but now when I try to play a DOS game in Windows, it won't detect the presence of a sound card.

So why don't I just go into real DOS mode, you ask? Because the game I want to play has never worked properly in true DOS for some odd reason. It crashes and erases the save games. So, that's why I need to run it from Windows.

  2. maybe you should look into vdms. also, if you're trying to play a lucasarts adventure game, you should check out scumm vm.

  3. What's your OS? NT and XP have DOS sound emulators.

  4. From my experience, most newer sound cards don't run in DOS anymore, or don't have the drivers to do so. However, SoundBlaster Live cards do DOS emulation.

Which card and OS are you using?

It's Windows 98. There is another computer in the house that's running Windows ME that I can use too.

I know it can work because it used to.

The game I'm trying to run is System Shock. It's one of my all-time favorites so I hate being denied playing through it again. There's no Windows patch for it as far as I can tell.

It doesn't look like vdms has a Win 98 version.

    yeah i just noticed.

this might not be too helpful, but microsoft has a support page devoted to the topic. i'm going to look for more answers, as this has been a problem for me in the past.

  7. I'm probably talking out of my ass here (it's been a while since I looked at something here), but if you're on Win98, I'd check your autoexec.bat to see if the legacy dos drivers are loading. You should see a line like : SET BLASTER = A220 I5 D1 .What sound card do you have? It could also be an IRQ conflict. Add any new cards to your PC of late?

Oh, and this link might be of assistance:

Never under any circumstance scrutinize the mastication orifice of a gratuitous herbivorous quadruped.

  8. If your sound card has legacy emulation in Windows, you can often see the resources it uses under Device Manager. Then you must specify those resources (address, IRQ, DMA) in the DOS game's setup program.

I just got System Shock running on my new box on Sunday, only lacking music. I was quite happy, and don't expect music will be a problem to get working. SS's setup program is pretty problematic.
