Nintendo Slashes European Gamecube Price

Microsoft's drop just may have had an influence here


Only two weeks before launch, Nintendo has announced that they will be cutting the price of the Gamecube in Europe by more than 20 percent. Originally set at 250 euros, it will now retail for 199 euros ($177 US), or 129 pounds in Britain. The Xbox and Playstation 2 both retail for 299 euros.

Nintendo will have 500,000 consoles available for the launch, and is coupling it with a 100 million euros advertising campaign. They plan to ship another 500,000 consoles in the following eight weeks. According to David Gocen, managing director of Nintendo Europe, over 30,000 eager gamers have pre-ordered the machine in Britain alone, with the number expected to rise as high as 50,000.
