Thread: Sony making a Halo killer?

  1. My bad.=\ I still think that it was more fun than Halo. It played very well for a FPS of that era.

The PS version of PowerSlave was no slouch, either.

16-player Halo? Not to propose that it wasn't fun, I'm sure it is, I've had fun with 4-player Halo, but, years before, I also had fun with 32-player Half-Life multiplayer, and I had my very own 17" monitor all to myself while I played it.

And it wasn't a chop-fest, either. Then again, that was at college on a T1.

The community of the experience is what pwns me, not the idea of playing 32 other people on half-life bent over a monitor, talking into a voice communicator designed to turn your voice into stephen hawkins, and complaining about spawn-killers.

It is fun to play online, don't get me wrong. But nothing I have ever seen from a videogame has ever brought my group of friends together on a friday night (we at one point had fourty people at my friend doug's house waiting their turns, and/or, watching) making food runs, getting drinks, cigarretes, coffee's etc...like we were all living in a frat house. And then the night ends with a 2 hour long CTF on sidewinder where the blue team wins by a goddamn hair and people get so mad from the loss and exhaustion that they just leave.

God that was a run on, but what can I say I love halo for those reasons. Its all I need.

  4. The people that don't like Halo have long made their minds up not too.

Nonetheless, like YAWA describes, it can be MP bliss at times. But the oft-lamented single-player game is really good too, especially if you put it Legendary. It completely changes the way you play, involves a whole new tier of tactical play, and really shows off the level of "AI" Bungie put into the enemies.

Right now, my brother and I were playing Legendary Co-op, and one part in particular stands out: After killing the Hunters, you and a bunch of marines board the Truth and Reconciliation via gravity lift. As soon as you board, the Covenant sense the intrusion, and send troops to dispatch you. They lock all the doors in the boarding room, opening them only to let in troops...first thing they send in -cloaked elites with laser blades. You desperately try and spot and kill the elites, who are quickly mowing down your baffled marines, while the send in support troops of all sorts...little dudes, elites, guys with riot shields, etc. -all of which require different tactics to kill on Legendary.

This whole time, you're dodging the homing needler shots, watching for tell-tale charging of shield-negating plasma charges, going melee to break through the riot shields, listening for audio cues that someone's tossing sticky grenades your way, and dancing away from the cloaked elites. Not to mention that you have to keep your marines alive if you can, while watching for friendly fire. The game presents a perfect balance between the availability of weapons, the time it takes to reload or pick up new guns off the ground, engaging maneuvers you know will deplete your shield with pre-conceived plan on how to allow for it to regenerate, and the ramifications of which weapon to choose for any given encounter -a choice that must be changed on the fly constantly. And it's all in beautiful Dolby Surround Sound.

I played Half-life, and Doom, and Serious Sam, but none of those ever put me in a situation like that. Granted, it's not perfect, but it was designed extremely well. The huge multiplayer parties it inspires is absolute icing on the cake...or just another cake entirely, really.

  7. Who the hell are the Lost Boys, and why should I give a shit about their game that won't be out for another year?

  8. whatever happened to planetside?

  9. The fact that these people (Sega and Sony, apprantly) are calling these games "Halo Killers" is really only helping Halo. All while they're getting buried in a ditch that they can't get out of.

    Good job, douchebags.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

  10. Halo killer? How about aiming a little higher...
