Thread: Run for the hills, here comes the RIAA!

  1. I buy music from iTunes Music Store. My long standing complaint with record companies was that I had to pay ~$13 for 2 or 3 good songs. Now that I only have to pay ~$3 for 3 good songs, it's worth it to me.

If I buy CDs, it's from this nice independent record store downtown. They don't pad prices a ridiculous amount on independent CDs like most major chains do, and I've noticed that even major label releases tend to be cheaper there, as well. If there's a CD I want, there's a good chance it's going to be under $15, even for special orders. Also the only place in town with a decent used vinyl section.

  3. My advice if one wants to boycott major labels is to support TRUE independent record companies and artists, as well as independently owned record stores - bring the music back to where its supposed to be. Check your city's 'alternative media' papers and magazines if you don't know off hand of any independently owned music stores and you'll probably be suprised at what you do find (unless you live in Bumfuck where walmart is the only thing happening) and try ordering stuff from independent online retailers.

Hell I've ordered products from www.sentinelsteel.com where the guy runs his mail order import business from his fucking house, the cds come in boxes with his own local newspapers used as packaging (once I got one with his grocery list written on the sports section)! Boycott major labels, but don't give up on music.

Same here. Since I doubt the RIAA is representing Yasunori Mitsuda I have very little to worry about.

  5. the thing is, i dont even dl music, but this just is a case of escalation between consumer and the companies, as yawa put it, i am taking it personally.

Speak of which, has the porn industry been throwing tantrums over porn trade online? Hasn't their business been increasing in recent years? It just seems like the record companies who are having a stroke over the issue.

  7. Uh... couldn't Kazaa and their sponsors launch retaliatory suits, seeing as how, in order to collect the information necessary for these suits, the RIAA would be misappropriating the use of their network in direct violation of the EULA? Come to think of it, wouldn't the RIAA personell involved be in danger of criminal charges for such action?

    VERY IMPORTANT.

My claims of bullshit were unfounded, it appears the RIAA as well as the MPAA are cracking down on this seriously, and they can and will see inside your computer. Therefore, I reccomend this...

    Download the program PeerGuardian.

    http://www.simplyclick.org/uploadertest/pgupdates.asp

    Follow the instructions seen here.

I can't reccomend this enough at this point, run it whether you're on p2ps at the moment or not. A friend of mine showed this to me, citing that he's had it since early this afternoon and has already seen the following messages:

Connection forcefully closed on: 64.227.153.122 - MPAA
Connection forcefully closed on: 64.227.153.122 - MPAA

Do what you will folks, but that's enough to convince me.

  9. This is why you don't use Kazaa.

Use SoulSeek, Direct Connect, Bit Torrent -- stick to the lower-profile sharing programs.

  10. I'm 35, so my music tastes vary from older music, to the latest music on the radio. I use Kazaa to find music, I can't purchase at the regular retail chain. Perhaps if the music was more readily available, I'd purchase it instead of downloading it.

I am not worried about the RIAA coming down on me, as my level of particapation is at a low level. Besides, the price of CD's has reached a far too high level of cost. It's time the music executives realise that there is a point, when cost outways the want of thier product.
