Yes. Even though I follow an ethos of open-mindedness and acceptance of others and their opinions, I still am a hypocrite.

sleeve,do you actually have something to say on the subject,or are you just being sleeveboy.
    Both.

he seemed to lack a strong feeling one way or the other
He felt strongly enough about the issue of segregation to set the current Senate record for a solo filibuster, at approximately 24 hours, during deliberations for the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

    (He was against it.)

he was a segregationist and a democrat when the south was predominantly democrat and segregationist. then he switched parties and mindsets with the political tides.
    What awe-inspiring leadership.

  3. He grew up in a different time with completely different views than what we have today. I mean, he was born 37 years after the Civil War...crazy. His service to his country through military and senate are commendable, imo.

the funny thing is, i thought this too, but cnn was saying that toward the end of his career, he reversed his position and became very pro intigration, cnn said he was the first congressman to have a african american aide. so perhaps we all should know more before saying this.
Holy shit, a lifelong politician changed his views once they became political suicide? I take back what I said. Clearly, the man had a heart of pure gold and obviously strongly believed in the cause of civil rights long after they were enacted.

I can't be sure, but if you're attempting to give me shit, I don't remember ever claiming to follow an ethos of open-mindedness and acceptance of others and their opinions, especially when those opinions are racist.

Of course. No one who lived a hundred years ago gave a damn about them backwards negroes and their plight.

Hitler was just a man of his times too, you know. No reason to vilify him. Hating Jews was perfectly acceptable in civilized society when he was born.

  5. "Hating Jews was perfectly acceptable in civilized society when he was born."

But killing them wasn't. And Jews were strongly disliked pretty much everywhere even when he did take over Germany. The guy has a point, whether you strongly disagree with it or not. Not saying that Strom was a good guy, but the comparison is overblown.

It's a shitty point. Enough of his fellow senators in 1964 voted for the Civil Rights act that it passed, and he certainly wasn't the oldest member of the Senate back then. And he wasn't just "going along with the crowd" as his supporters claim. As sleeveboy pointed out, he led a filibuster against the act by speaking for 24 hours straight.

    No shit.

  7. "And he wasn't just "going along with the crowd" as his supporters claim"

    No one said he did.

  8. frostwolf did.

  9. No, you said that he did

you: "Holy shit, a lifelong politician changed his views once they became political suicide?"

    He'd have been elected anyway.
