Thread: PAL Games on NTSC Systems

  1. PAL Games on NTSC Systems

I am from Canada, but I am in England right now for about a month, and possibly longer for school.

I was wondering if PAL games are compatible with modded (of course) NTSC systems -- GameCube Xbox, specifically?

    Thanks in advance.

Edit: I was thinking that if PAL games won't play on a modded system, I could buy a VGA adapter and use that.

  2. I believe most PAL games now have a 60 Hz mode -- which is what NTSC runs in (PAL runs at 50 Hz). It's usually selectable at boot-up.

  3. 60Hz again!

Yes, check the game beforehand or ask around to see if it has a 50/60Hz selection. Some games do and some don't on GC and XBox. If they've got 60Hz they should work with a mod or boot disc. I strees SHOULD WORK though. Be careful.

One problem though: If you bring them back to Canada and play them through composite you'll probably get a black and white picture. But playing through RGB or VGA they'll look fine. Maybe S-Video too but I've no experience with that.

  4. Are you serious? Because I am trying to get Doshin the Giant PAL version for Gamecube. I have a US Gamecube that is hooked up with component and a Freeloader. Do you think it will be black and white? How do you select it? Similar to selecting progressive scan?

  5. Component & Composite

I'm not entirely sure. Composite is not the same as component. A useful mnemonic is to think of "COMPOSt" and "COMPOSite." They're closely related.

Composite has all the video information sent into one plug and is generally crap. It's the yellow, red and white one. On most TVs here in PAL land it will give me a black and white picture from an NTSC game. You'll have the same problem with a PAL game.

Component (green, blue, red) I'm not sure about. I suspect your PAL game will display OK with it though, since it's apparently a good quality signal. Someone else should have more knowledge of component. Maybe Matt will reply if he's around.
