No, it's because upright is stupid and inpractical or you're shit at games and get knocked off the machine on your first credit so the discomfort doesn't bother you. Some of the reasons people are giving here are so daft. Can't play unless standing up? How do you play fighters at home then?

If I plan to camp out at one machine for awhile, I'll grab a stool. Most of the time, espically when playing fighters, I rather prefer standing up.

I rarely see Japanese sit-down cabinets in arcades (at least the ones I've been to), so standing up at stand-up cabinets feels more natural.

it honestly depends on the game.

racing/flying/etc is always a sit down.

fighting games are always stand up(i dont care if japan has sit cabs, if you want to be able to play correctly and not get gimp wrist by the time yer 23, you need to stand).

old school games(popeye/galaga/final fight/etc) are standing up. but if i get an ashtray, then it's time to sit down and own.

any type of music game without the title "dance" and or "pump" in the titles....sit down.
