what is a flip top mod?
So I got my fliptop mod today and I went to install it right away. I had to ask my Dad if I could borrow his percision screwdriver set.
WHAT? I'LL JUST DO IT FOR YOU!
See, my dad is fairly good with handling computers as in, assembling them. He sucks at actually using them, but the technical aspect he has down.
Im not even sure what went wrong, the picture below was taken after I attempted to play a game and after the horrible grinding noises.
I'm pissed about it since I won't be able to play Initial D for a while, but thats about it. I don't plan on repairing it or getting it replaced for a while since I'm going to be buying computer parts for Half-Life 2 for the next month or so.
So does this count as the first FlipTop horror story on TNL?
Oh, and if anyone has any idea on a quick fix, please tell!

what is a flip top mod?
Apparently something that can make a PS2 smell like bacon if installed incorrectly.
It is a cheap non modchip method for playing some imports, but has been deemed a good way to make your PS2 die early by many different sources. It is pretty much a new shell for your PS2 with a door on the top of the system. You have to dissassemble your system & put the insides into the new shell. This goes along with a boot disc that will let you play imports, but not all imports. Psyvivar doesn't work, & the Death Label mode in DDP DOJ won't work with it either.

sounds too risky
Damn, I need a good way to play PS2 imports, and I don't like the sound of "doesn't play all games". Are Japanese PS2's still more expensive than black market infants?
Are there any reliable mod chips that have a reasonably small number of solder points?
The new JPS2 was supposed to launch a while ago I think (June). A little quieter, DVD remote included. At the time, it was going to be 207 USD. So if you imported it, it wouldn't be the ridiculous 330 or something that everyone was asking for just a few months ago. I don't know if it's out yet though.
a piece of shit cheap ass mod people do when they're too "scared" to chip their system. you see that thing in my sig? get somebody to put that in and dumb shit like this wont happen.Originally posted by Dustin

and chibbi....no the really reliable mods still have 21+ points (the ultra, messiah, et cet.)
www.ps2case.com has all the info on the Flip Top mod. I'm remotely considering getting one, but after this... nah.

From what JM and Dyne said, it sounds like you got what you deserved, Sl1p. Hope you learned a lesson. Next time just use a mod chip.
And the title of this thread is misleading- it makes it sound like your PS2 just up and died instead of your daddy killing it.

Ah ha. Well then, are the solder points (especially those on the console itself) reasonably large? The moral of the story is that I don't want to send my system away and be without DDR Max for a significant amount of time while someone installs a chip, but I really need to be able to play imports since Dodonpachi and Beatmania IIDX 3rd are just sitting on my shelf collecting dust.Originally posted by Dragonmaster Dyne
