Thread: Review: Brute Force

  1. Review: Brute Force

    Alright listen up, soldiers.

There's been some mumbling going around that this game was supposed to be the next best thing since we've laid our hands on Halo. Of course, to any hardcore fans of the franchise know that this it by far transcends anything that other developers can throw at us (for now). Currently the bar has been set and it looks like it won't be matched anytime soon, until the spiritual successor lands on our doorsteps.

A huge shadow has been cast over games like Brute Force which were developed in the hopes to appeal to the aforementioned fanbase. Suffice it to say, its release has been a hit-or-miss among the gaming audience. So does Digital Anvil's first shooter fare, and should you fork over $50 bucks or put it as a downpayment towards err...something else?

    Our report gives the answer.

  2. I just wonder why people would even think that it would be as good as Halo (i don't think it's that good, but that is another story). That would be like me saying "Well this new Kirby game will be as good as Conker's Bad Fur Day because CBFD was made by a Nintendo owned developer and so is this".

  3. Nice review Bahn. I agree on some comments, such as enemy AI, or the storyline. And Tex was pretty annoying

But I thought graphically the game was quite good looking(not Halo but nice), but the way you only fought on 4 or 5 planets, made the environments look little repetetive.

But Co-Op feature was what made me and DJ enjoy it quite a bit. He would always grab Brutus and rush into the action, while I would pick up Flint and snipe the opposition from the distance. It all worked out nice, and we had great deal of fun. Well, except the Last Boss fight, which was more annoying than anything.

As for absense of Live support, I dont really care at this time, since I dont have Xbox Live, and probably wont be getting it for a while, since there are still no games on it that would really attract me to play on line. But available co-op option, made the game more entertaining.

Ya, the graphics were cool, but the reason why I didn't gush over it was because the landscape design was very repetitive and linear in its approach. Halo offers substantially a broader degree of freedom and perhaps that's because it's a first-person shooter whereas this is not. I am hoping that Starcraft Ghost won't fall into this problem as I am looking forward to it as well.

As for the Live support, I think that it would've made the appeal of this game much stronger. Imagine being able to link up with other buddies besides those that are sitting next to you. Live support isn't the be-all, end all, but since this is the direction Microsoft is looking to take the majority of its games - I was expecting this game to offer that.

Co-op is cool and the single player is especially solid. However the enemy AI was more artitifical than intelligent. Very bland in my opinion, and I was disappointed.

Thanks for your input! I'll be back with more in the coming week or so.

Curious, what is it specifically that you dislike about Halo?

  5. Right out of the gate, I don't like using a gamepad for FPSes. I never have. But aside from that, A) I wasn't a huge fan of the repetitive environments and B) the whole time I played it I kept saying, "This would be such a piece of cake to play with a KB/M combo". The challenge didn't seem there, and you could exploit the health regeneration. Basically, I'm saying that the control method, while it may be the best on a console, added a lot of artificial difficulty. To be frank about it, I thought that if it had made its way to the PC (in its current form, not the old planned form), it would have been regarded as merely "above average". But that's me ;p
