You can probably get a Sony Cybershot 4.0 megapixel camera for around 300.
As the title states, I'm in the market for a digital camera. I'm hoping I can sneak it in under $300 for the base unit, although I understand that there's all sorts of extras it may want that can set me back a good bit more. My knowlege of digital cameras, though, is best described as dismal.
So, any advice?
James
Aldi (a grocery store chain) has a 4.1 megapixel digi-cam available for $300, and a 2.0 one available for $100. I'll try and find exact links to the area on the www.aldifoods.com site with the dig-cams in them.

James, go here:

and

here.
dpreview lets you do comparisons by price/features/etc/etc/etc. Find a couple of camers in your price range, then read the all the reviews on said camera you can find on both sites.
Also check out the forums on both sites and see what they say.

Lots of online retailers, and you're almost guaranteed to find a better price online, than at your local Best Buy.
We just got Minolta DiMage 440 and it works great. Wife likes it alot, its 4 Megapixel and gets some very good reviews. Cost us about $370 and $420 with memory, charger, reader, and batteries.
I'm very happy with my Kodak EasyShare DX4300. It was $299 when I got it, but it might have gone down in price. It's 3.1 MP's, and I'm really pleased with the pictures.
Check my web site for some pics I took with it, if you want some proof - though they are edited to a small res.
Alright, time to bust out some camera knowledge.
This HP digital camera is brand new on the market and is rediculously easy to use. By "easy to use," I mean usual HP idiotproofing, which means you won't have nearly as many options on this as you would on other cameras. The specs are up there, though. 3.2 MegaPixels, SD expansion and all, plus Optical and Digital zoom (having a camera with no optical zoom is like owning a toy). Not bad if you just wanna take pictures.
Otherwise, if you don't mind spending the extra money, this camera is even better. The Casio Exilim z-3 has mostly the same specs as the first one I showed ya, but more options and it uses both SD cards and MultiMedia cards (which are cheaper). Plus, it's tiny!
Then, there's the rediculous Sony 5.0 MegaPixel Camera, but I just think that's too much.
Don't get suckered into buying more accessories than you have to, though. Case, maybe. Screen covers, maybe. Extra memory card DEFINITELY. Just watch out...
Give the Olympus Mju 300 a spin - it's gorgeous.
Id look for a camera that uses SD, MMC, Smart Media or CF.
XD and Memory Stick is too damn expensive comparatively.
Im a big fan of Olympus and Cannon. The thing about digital cameras is its not so much the Electronics as much as it is the optics, thats why i'd buy a digital camera from a camera company.
