Thread: Dragon Warrior Monsters

  1. Dragon Warrior Monsters

I saw this game for $10 today at Circuit City, and as a fan of both Dragon Warrior and monster catching it caught my eye. After reading some positive reviews from IGN and Gamespot I've become even more interested. So before I go out and buy DWM, I was just wondering if anyone here has played it? If so, can you tell me how it measures up to Pokemon?

  2. Yes, being a huge fan of the series prompted me to get this on day 1. I've never played any Pokemon game, so I couldn't tell you how it stacks up against it, but I can tell you that DWM is basically pure fanservice disguised as a Pokemon-clone. If you like monster catching and the DW series, this is a must-buy.

    Good:
    - Tons of classic DW (and DWM original) monsters to collect, battle, breed, etc.
    - Familiar locales and music themes. You'll recognize a lot of stuff if you've played DQ 1-6.
    - Like DQ6 and 7, buttloads of neat abilities and spells to discover.
    - Metal Slimes/Babbles in your warparty kick serious ass.

    Bad:
    - The game wants you to use the AI commands during battle (Charge, Mixed, Cautious). It's a bit of a pain to command all 3 of your monsters manually.
    - "Dungeons" in this game are all randomly-generated, and some are so big (24+ floors), it takes an hour or more to fully explore them.
    - There's so many possibilites when breeding your monsters that the strategy guide (or online FAQ, whichever) is basically a must. You'll at least want a list of abilities and which monsters use them.
