Thread: EGM's question of the month

  1. EGM's question of the month

    Another month, another soul-probing question:

What's the worst glitch you've found in a recent console game?

And of course, in this case, "worst" also kind of means "funniest." You can post your answers here, but if you'd like to be in the magazine, please email your response with a picture of yourself to egm@ziffdavis.com. And check the latest issue (coming to subscribers imminently) for a shot of Bahn's ugly mug

    Thanks!

  2. Well, since I don't have a decent pic of myself available, I'll just reply here.
Worst bug- The super-bad, mega-suck GTA: Vice City bug on the PS2 that wonderfully causes you to basically lose your progress in the game by saving at the ice cream joint. Nothing like bush league glitches in a blockbuster game.

  3. I haven't personally experienced it, but I remember that EGM mentioned a glitch in Batman Beyond for PS1 that doesn't let you get past the second level.

  4. The worst glitch in a recent game is getting stuck between two walls in Tomb Raider: The last rev. within the first three minutes of me playing. =/

    good call..

MK2 has a bunch of interesting glitches involving a few moves and some fatalities that are insanely tough to do, but are extra cool when you pull em off..

a rare case of 'good' glitches.

  7. Morrowind's Dirty Disk Error.

  8. JohnK, remember, "recent" game glitches. Although, to continue with the retro vibe, SF II had Ryu's orange fireballs is a nice glitch, before they became a standard move.

The worst I've seen in a recent game that was funny was an instance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for PlayStation 2. I did a jump off a ramp, got massive air, and remained suspended in the air up near the roof. For about three minutes straight, I just kept performing all kinds of tricks, until I finally "unstuck" myself and eventually landed for a combo that was worth several billion points. I chose not to save it to my memory card, because I didn't consider that as accomplishing a "real" combo.

The worst I've seen in a recent game that was not funny involves Iron Soldier 3 for NUON. There's a strange bug in the game that causes it to lock up randomly, at any time. Sometimes, you can play for hours with no problem. Other times, it might lock up 20 minutes into the mission, or perhaps one minute into the mission, or even on the opening FMV intro right after you boot the machine. There's no predictable pattern for triggering it--like I said, it can happen at any time. It was so severe that VM Labs recalled the game a day or two after its release (supposedly to fix the bug), only to leak a few of those same copies back out to a handful of online retailers a couple of months later. Eventually, they gave most of the remaining discs away for free (without box or manual) through NUON-Dome. It's a crying shame, because it's a great game that you're afraid to actually play because you don't know when the bug will occur. Thankfully, I've also got the PlayStation version, which doesn't look quite as good, but plays better due to much better control (using the Dual Shock) and memory card save (as opposed to passwords on NUON). On the bright side, since the NUON version is so rare, it's very valuable as a collectible--even more so if you've got the box and manual like I do!

  10. For me, it is another Vice City crappo (how this game got past QA boggles my mind).

Anyway, I was doing a bunch of missions and got to the Rub Out mission. You have to go into a house and kill a guy. The first time I did the mission, I got in and nearly killed him. I dies though. "No big deal", I said, "I still have more missions to do now. So I do those, save the game, and go back to Rub Out, the only mission left currently. I cannot enter the house anymore. So all the effort I put into the game was gone, because my save is after I lost the mission the first time.
