Shin Megami Tensei Nine was split into offline and online portions quite a while back, and the offline portion was released early this year. Now the online portion has been cancelled, probably due to the same problems that led to it being split into offline and online components (whatever those problems may have been).

Jiji: When they say they're 'splitting off the online portion of the game', that typically means they're trying to find a way of getting rid of a promised feature without actually saying it or being held responsible to the media for it.

Not me, it's not like that thing is flying off the shelves. I mean, fuck, from April to June Nintendo sold 80,000 GameCube units worldwide. That's not the type of numbers that get 3rd parties excited.
Releasing a game they don't think will cause them to lose money will only exacerbate that.
If they are smart the go multiplatform for everything, where money permits.
