Thread: The start of school/fall semester?

  1. Well duh. I'm just sayin'.
Well that's like, your opinion, man.

Yeah, just wanted to let you all know. But college is pretty awesome so far. Classes only started a few days ago so I can't properly gauge their difficulty, but they're not so bad. It's just crazy seeing 500 kids in one room learning about calculus.

And frat houses are strange places. I was in one that looked a subway station. The whole party scene in general is strange. Literally hundreds of kids gather at this one spot on campus waiting for cabs, and it's like impossible to get one because everyone is trying to flag them down. Then you just ask the cab driver where the best party is, which ones got raided, ect., and he'll take ya there, no questions asked. Very convenient.

Living situation isn't that great, but I've gotten used to it. I'm currently broke as fuck, which sucks, and I have absolutely no time for a job that would pay me any decent money. But whatever.

All in all, college is a pretty odd institution. Like this little world setup for 18-22 year olds to learn about physics, then get totally trashed on the weekends.
I myself have missed out and will continue to miss out on that stuff - I don't live on campus and have had to work during my college years part time (who else is going to be able to pay for all the extra shit that goes along with such an expensive endeavor - nevermind life in general). I haven't really had time to party, not that I study 24/7 either but hell, between working and going to school and trying to maintain some semblance of a normal 'social life' (which really consists of shit) I'm so exhausted by the end of the day that partying isn't worth it.

The city I live in, Houston, has only one option for stuff to do anyway, go to clubs or sports bars and get trashed. Bah. No. The only place I actually go to hang out and meet up with people now is the communal Denny's nearby - its far enough from home to feel like I'm out doing something but close enough to not have to deal with actually driving into Houston. Man... this city is really boring. Argh, life is boring - weee I have work in a couple hours, something to do. Shit, I wish I didn't always have to feel like this on Fridays, I'm so predictable these days. =\

  3. In defense of geology:
I would have thought, until I took a course about it, that geology is mostly about rocks and is utterly boring. Or something. Duh.
It's not like that at all. Geologic systems are what keep the earth going from day to day. What's so neat about geology is that it's *everywhere*. I liken it to being fascinated with animals and nature. Sure, it's "just there", but really there is a fascinating complexity for some of the most basic phenomena we take for granite.
Take a walk outside and there can be a geology lesson.
As a computer science major, I thought that the systems mankind makes are intricate and cleaver. In something like geology there'sthe realization that these man-made systems pale in comparison to the genius of mother nature. You think circuit analysis or processor architecture can be a work of art? Try learning about mother nature, you might like it.

Post-college, pumpkin-defenestrating, tricycle racing angst. Whoosh.

Aye indeed - last Fall semester in 2002, I took probably what are my two most favorite courses I've taken in college so far, Physical Geology and Historical Geology - i needed two science credits and these didn't make you take labs so i thought why not. They were both wonderful classes, most everyone else hated them and the material involved but i got easy A's in them. I was suprised at how I'd be plodding along in class trying to get myself distracted in reading a magazine while the teach was lecturing and instead would be paying attention. The class really opened up my eyes a bit as to what really goes on in and on Earth.

Historical geology was a mind-fuck b/c learning about the geological time scale is jaw-dropping...especially when you get into things about when man finally came along and civilization came about, the science is humbling just like its fellow astronomy. I actually enjoyed studying for the tests b/c I'd find myself plunging into reading tons of material about things I'd normally have skipped over. In all, I think the class made me appreciate the planet a lot more, and worry over what the fuck we're doing to it.

  6. I took astronomy for my last science class. Thank god I got most of the work from a friend. Saved me a shit load of time. Best part was the final was just a mix of the 5 quizes we took during the semester. I finished 70 questions in about 20 minutes.

  7. Another science lost on so many. Aaahh, astronomy is so grand.
