Thread: okay, so how much do they take out in taxes?

  1. okay, so how much do they take out in taxes?

okay in all my jobs i file under single/dependent whatever and have the most taken out of my checks every month. been thinking about picking up another job and it would pay $8.50/hour 30 hours a week. about how much would i expect to actually take home? because the total before taxes is around $1020/month but we all know thats not close to what you take home. can any of you math guys figure this out?

  2. Including Fica? I'd do a factor of 35%, and be happy with what you get past that. The taxes themselves aren't horrible (unless you live in Cali or NY) but Social Security and Medicare take a large chunk of change. Depending on the state you live in, I'd factor in about 32~35% for taxes+Fica.

  3. so we're lookin at around $700?

  4. Probably. Might come out better, but not neccessarily by much. Granted, you should get virtually every bit of actual tax dollars back come Tax time next year. Don't take my word for it though. I could be wrong. I just know what my avg take home has been for the last 5 years. See if anyone else chimes in.

  5. It's a graduated scale, depending on how much you make. They recently revised it. Taxes are only 10% or so through the first 6 or ten thousand... 15% up to about 25 thousand, then 30-ish % after that. Of course, Wolffen's right too, don't forget State tax and soc sec etc.

So, your first 6000-whatever is taxed at 10%, then up to 25-whatever is taxed at 15... etc.

I think there might be another bracket in there that I'm forgetting, too, but I think you get the idea.

  6. Basically, I've found that for every five days you work, one doesn't count. So, in essence, you work four days out of five for your business and another for the government.

The government has been taking about 35-40% of what I make since I bought a house.

Well, this is when I actually have a job that the government knows about... which isn't often.

  8. Too much.

  9. thanks for all the info guys. and 88 40%? that must suck.

Eh, a while back I got a part time job in addition to my full time job. It didn't pay much, but it was basically free money. However, at the end of the year, I ended up paying more extra for taxes than I made at that second job. Dammit.
